Wednesday, September 28, 2016

Summary
The Salve Regina University men's soccer team scored four goals in a six minute stretch of the second half to break a 0-0 tie on its way to a 6-0 victory over visiting Massachusetts Maritime Academy in non-conference action Wednesday at Brother Reynolds Field.

Series and Streaks
This was the eighth meeting between the two teams. The Seahawks now own a 5-3 record in the all-time series and have won the last two meetings.

Three Stars of the Match
1 – Salve Regina sophomore Matthew O'Donnell (Pittsburgh, Pa.) - scored the third goal of the game and assisted on the first and fifth tallies.
2 – Salve Regina junior Jared Warren (Georgetown, Mass.) - scored the first and fourth goals of the game.
3 – Salve Regina senior Nolan Brady (Needham, Mass.) - scored the second goal of the game and assisted on the fourth.

Turning Point
The Seahawks had outshot the Buccaneers 16-6 in the first half and generated many quality scoring chances, but the game remained scoreless. That changed almost immediately after half-time. In the 48th Jared Warren broke though, pushing a pass from O'Donnell past the keeper for the first score of the afternoon. Nolan Brady added another in the 52nd firing a ball from the top of the box to the back of the net after a corner kick from Evan Dudney (North Andover, Mass.). O'Donnell added his first score of the afternoon in the 53rd followed by Warren's second when he touched in a cross from Nolan Brady in the 54th to give the Seahawks a commanding 4-0 lead.

Quick Hits

  • Freshman forward Michael Nadtochij (Medway, Mass.) scored his first collegiate goal in the 73rd.
  • Sophomore midfielder Nathaniel Crocker (Hallowell, Maine) scored his first collegiate goal in the 81st to complete the Seahawks scoring output for the day.
  • The Seahawks outshot the Buccaneers 28-14 in the match.

Quote
"I thought when we gained the attacking third in the first half, we became rather stagnant and were unable to stretch their back four.  In the second half, it was the exact opposite – we were able to find the pockets of space in the midfield third and go at their backline.  Then the strikers added the dynamic element that we were missing in the first half.  I thought O'Donnell was excellent for us in the midfield and in particular, during that opening 10-minute stretch of the second half.  And both Finizio and Elster provided a much needed degree of consistency in the width going forward." - Salve Regina head coach Craig O'Rourke II
