NEWPORT, R.I. - UMass Boston out shot the Salve Regina University men's soccer team 28-9 in a 3-0 victory on Reynolds Field to begin the 2015 season.

The Beacons applied pressure early but aggressive goaltending from freshman keeper Michael Payan (Fort Lee, N.J.) kept UMass off the board. The same aggressive play however could not stop the first goal of the game.

Arlindo Goncalves (Brockton, Mass.) carried the ball down the sideline then fed it out in front of the goal where three Beacons players were waiting. Payan came out to challenge forcing a short pass to Pedro Dasilve (Fogo, Cape Verde) who had a wide open net to shoot at, netting the first score of the afternoon.

The Seahawks answered with some pressure of their own and maintained a steady presence in the Beacons end but were not able to generate any quality scoring chances. Both defenses tightened up and play became relegated to the midfield.

The Beacons scored again in the fortieth minute in the game. Kilsmam Mendes (Fogo, Cape Verde) beat Kyle Knoth (East Islip, N.Y.) down the right side then tried to feed the ball in front of the net. Steven Aston (Sherborn, Mass.), who was trailing the play, had the ball hop off his cleat and bounce  towards the net where Guilherme Barbosa (Saugus, Mass.) roofed a shot over the Seahawk keeper for a 2-0 Beacons advantage.

As the game progressed the Beacons continued to slowly wear down the Seahawks, spending more time in Salve Regina's end of the field, pinching in their backs near midfield to keep the possessions alive.

The Seahawks were able to generate a few chances midway through the second half, including one where Peter Kristensen (Sharon, Vt.) had a one-on-one situation with Beacons keeper Estive Sosa (Chelsea, Mass.), but was not able to capitalize.

The Beacons added their final tally of the afternoon on a long distance shot from Giovanni Lima (Sao Paulo, Brazil) who drove the ball on a rope from 28 yards away that Payan had no chance to stop.

With the victory the Beacons start the season 1-0 while the Seahawks fall to 0-1.

Next up for the Seahawks is a match with Johnson & Wales on the road this Wednesday, September 3, at 5 p.m. UMass Boston will continue their seven-game roadtrip on Saturday, when the Beacons travel to Thomas College for a 5 p.m. contest.
