Colonels top Seahawks in regular season finale

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's lacrosse team concluded the regular season with a 13-9 victory over visiting Salve Regina University in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at Walter M. Katz Field on Tuesday night.

The Colonels close the regular season with a 10-5 overall record and a 5-3 mark in the CCC while the Seahawks slip to 10-6 and 4-4 in league action.

Salve Regina jumped on the board first just 55 seconds into the contest on an unassisted tally from Brendan Kelly (Long Beach, N.Y.). Devin Newell (Medford, Mass.) put the home squad on the scoreboard with a goal at the 10:31 mark. Two minutes later, MJ Urbano (Wakefield, Mass.) found the back of the net off a helper from Andrew DeLeary (Wakefield, Mass.) to put Curry up 2-1. The visitors answered with two straight goals, one apiece from Zach Makoske (Shoreham, N.Y.) and the other from Pat Leary (Wakefield, Mass.) with 5:33 to go in the quarter to make the score 3-2. Zach White (Milford, Conn.) took the ground ball right off the faceoff and deposited it in the back of the net just seven seconds later to knot the game at three. Makoske had one final marker for the Seahawks in the frame when he found the back of the net, off an assist from Leary with 1:40 left to give Salve Regina the 4-3 advantage after one.

The Colonels shut out the Seahawks in the second quarter, outscoring the visitors 4-0. Urbano and Jake Stebbins (Colchester, Vt.) were the first to strike off of unassisted markers while DeLeary finished off back-to-back goals, both coming off assists from Newell to send Curry into the break with a 7-4 lead.

Salve Regina started the second half with an unassisted goal from Kelly to pull the Seahawks to within two but a 3-0 run, thanks to goals from Urbano, Cameron Nigro (Scarborough, Maine), and Matt Serra (Haverhill, Mass.) doubled up the lead for the Colonels, 10-5. Tom Cashin (Boxford, Mass.) tallied the assist on the Serra goal, marking his 100th career point. The Seahawks would net the final two of the quarter on goals from Leary and Ethan Robson (Lincoln, R.I.), but still trailed 10-7 at the end of three.

Salve Regina found the net twice more in the final stanza, tallying the first and final goals of the quarter. Ryan Heeter (Wading River, N.Y.) put up the first goal of the frame, which was unassisted. A 3-0 spurt powered by two from Serra and the final from Cashin sent the lead back to five, 13-8 with 6:45 to go in regulation. Leary found the nylon with just 20 seconds left in regulation as the contest would end with a four-goal margin, 13-9.

Urbano and Serra both finished with hat tricks while DeLeary, Newell, and Cashin all finished with multiple points on the night. Chris Bronander (Glen Ridge, N.J.) paced the Colonel defense with 13 ground balls while White closed the game going 19-for-26 on faceoffs.

Leary led the way for the Seahawks, netting four points on a hat trick and one assist. Makoske and Kelly were the only other Salve Regina student-athletes to close the contest with multiple points. Makoske also paced the visitors with eight ground balls while Joe Sousa (Cranston, R.I.) went 6-for-24 at the faceoff circle.

Josh Teller (Milford, Conn.) picked up the win for Curry in the cage. The junior converted 15 saves against 24 shots. Matt D'Amore (Duxbury, Mass.) was credited the loss, making 21 saves facing 31 shots.

Both squads will await the pairings for the upcoming CCC Tournament scheduled to begin this weekend
