NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University men's ice hockey head coach Zech Klann announces the commitment of Seth Benson (Moorhead, Minn.) for the 2020-21 season.

"We look forward to Seth bringing a complete two-way game to our hockey program and contribute both offensively and defensively," said Klann. "Seth has great size combined with straightaway speed. He thrives on playing hard in the compete zones. Our staff recruited him due to his ability to win 1-on-1 battles consistently. Seth Benson's work ethic on and off the ice will be a great addition to our Seahawk program!"

Benson spent 26 games with the Topeka Pilots in the North American Hockey League (NAHL) and 16 games with the Buffalo Jr. Sabres in the Ontario Junior Jockey League (OJHL) during the 2019-20 season registering six goals and nine assists for 15 total points.

Benson, who will be the first Minnesotan born player to play for Salve Regina in program history, felt that everything lined up for him to come to Newport.

"Everything was just good for what I wanted to do with my career," said Benson on his decision to commit to Salve Regina. "I'm excited to get back to hockey, meet some great guys, and get the season rolling."

The 6-4, 200-pound Benson, describes himself as a fast and physical player with a scoring touch.

"This particular athlete has overcome so much adversity in his life and hockey career," said assistant coach Chris Davis. "We see Seth as a great signing for our program because he adds grit and is not afraid to bring his large frame to the front of the net. He will find immediate success at this level of hockey and continue to progress if he consistently causes havoc in front of our opponents' net front. This young man has consistently persevered through tough situations and Salve Regina ice hockey are extremely excited to receive a commitment from an athlete with the character of Seth Benson!"
