SEAHAWK MEN'S ICE HOCKEY RESULTS

Suffolk 3, Salve Regina 2
Portsmouth, R.I. – Portsmouth Abbey
Saturday, January 23, 2016

Summary
After trailing 2-0 in the first Suffolk University scored three straight goals to grab a 3-2 road win over Salve Regina University in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Northeast action Saturday afternoon inside the Portsmouth Abbey while a snowstorm raged outside.

Series and Streaks
The all-time series is now tied 11-11-3 between these two clubs after tying earlier this season in Boston and the Rams winning today in Portsmouth.

Three Stars of the Game
1 – Suffolk senior Brandon Smolarek (Chesterfield, Mich.) made 34 saves in net for the Rams
2 – Suffolk sophomore Luke Miller (Lancaster, Calif.) score the game winning goal on a breakaway 5:52 into the third period to complete the comeback for the Rams.
3 – Salve Regina freshman Shaun Patry (Penfield, N.Y.) scored in the first period on a nifty backhand shot, sneaking the puck by Smolarek to give the Seahawks their largest lead.

Key Stat of the Game
After outshooting the Rams 27-10 through two periods and controlling the game the Seahawks were outshot 16-9 in the third period and gave up two goals in a 2:36 span of time to surrender the lead.

Turning Point
The Rams tied the game on a puck that bounced oddly off the end glass right back out in front of Seahawks netminder Blake Wojtala (Trenton, Mich.). Nick Mosher (Cumming, Ga.) batted it out of the air and into the back of the net to tie the game 2-2. With plenty of time left it was anyone's game but nearly two and half minutes later Luke Miller split two defenders through the neutral zone for a breakaway that he buried to give the Rams their first lead of the night. A lead they would not relinquish.

Quick Hits

  • Wojtala had to face a penalty shot from Mosher with 2:59 remaining in regulation and made a big stop to keep the Seahawks hopes alive, still trailing but just one goal.
  • Wojtala made 25 saves for the Seahawks and now falls to 10-6-0 on the season.
  • The Seahawks were 1-4 on the power-play while the Rams were 1-3.
  • Mike Cherpak (Enfield, Conn.) scored for Suffolk on the power-play, 12:20 into the first period as the Rams began their comeback.
  • Cameron Russo (Billerica, Mass.) notched another assist, making it two straight games with a point in just his third game played.
  • The Rams blocked 12 Seahawks shots.
