Tepper, Venuto both score twice in Seahawk victory

BEVERLY, Mass.— The Endicott field hockey team fell, 5-4, in a tough battle with the visiting Salve Regina University Seahawks in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Saturday afternoon at North Field, as four goals were scored between the two teams in the last eight minutes.

With the loss, the Gulls slide to 7-7 overall, 5-2 in the CCC, while Salve Regina moved to 10-2 overall and 6-1 in the CCC.

Freshman forward Sophia Cogliano (Saugus, Mass.) got the Gulls on the scoreboard first with a shot to the back left of the cage on a feed from sophomore defender Emylee Wood (Kensington, N.H.) in the 11th minute.

The Seahawks charged right down the field and answered with a goal of their own as sophomore forward Lindsey Venuto (Foxboro, Mass.) had a quick strike to the back right from senior forward Abigail Tepper (Foxboro, Mass.).

Tepper and Wood followed up their assists with their own goals in the 17th minute and 29th minute, respectively, as the teams went into halftime tied 2-2.

The Seahawks took a 3-2 lead on another Tepper goal in the 49th minute, followed by two more Salve Regina goals in the 62nd minute (Erin Gendreau) and Venuto again in the 64th minute.

Senior forward Morgan Bresnahan (South Burlington, Vt.) and sophomore midfielder Samantha Crowley (Leicester, Mass.) teamed up with goals in the 65th and 67th minutes as Endicott's rally fell just short as time expired.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Today's game saw the Gulls suffer just their third loss to Salve Regina in program history, 17-3-1 all-time against the Seahawks dating back to the 2003 season.
  • E. Wood recorded one goal and one assist for the Gulls. (Wood had two goals against Salve Regina in a 4-2 win on September 16.)
  • Senior goalkeeper Rose Bradley (Pottstown, Pa.) (6-7) made 10 saves for the Gulls.

FOR THE FOES

  • Tepper had two assists to go with two goals in the game bring her season goal total to 19.
  • Venuto scored twice, bringing her season total to five.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Jessie Severino (Branford, Conn.) made nine saves as she earned her 10th win of the season in goal.

NOTES

  • Endicott suffered its first loss against the Seahawks in the last five meetings. The last loss came on Oct. 2, 2013 in 1-0 fashion in Middletown, R.I.
  • The Gulls lost for the first time against Salve Regina at North Field. (9-1-1 all-time)

WHAT'S NEXT
Endicott (7-7, 5-2 CCC) will travel to Biddeford, Maine to face UNE on Wednesday, October 14 at 6:00 p.m. as the Gulls look to avenge a 3-2 (OT) loss to the Nor'easters on September 22.
Salve Regina (10-2, 6-1 CCC) will host Bridgewater St. on Tuesday, October 13 at 7 p.m. in a non-conference contest.
