Seahawks fall to Gulls in first CCC matchup

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – The Salve Regina University field hockey team fell 4-2 to Endicott College in the first Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match of the season Wednesday night at Gaudet Field.

Salve Regina led 1-0, but the Gulls outscored the Seahawks 4-1 the remainder of the game to earn their first conference win of the season.

Allison Gold (Greenlawn, N.Y.) struck first for the Seahawks just 3:57 into the game. Gold stole the ball from Maggie O'Reilly (Chesire, Conn.) near the Gulls 35 yard line and drove down the middle, flicking on shot on goal that snuck past the right pad of Endicott keeper Rose Bradley (Pottstown, Pa.) for the game's first score.

The Seahawks held the lead for nearly ten minutes as they controlled time of possession until Emylee Wood (Kensington, N.H.) got Endicott on the board.

Wood carried the ball down the right side and threw a shot into the group of players in front of the net. The shot careened off a stick and leapt into the air over everyone and into the cage.

Endicott would take the lead on another Wood goal with 10:28 to go in the half; this time rolling a ball through a maze of defenders to make it 2-1 Gulls.

The Seahawks tied the game on a goal from Abigail Tepper (Foxboro, Mass.), set up by Lindsey Mazzola (Upton, Mass.). Mazzola fed Teper who was taking up position in front of the cage and Tepper was able to eventually get her stick on the ball to roll it inside the far post to score the equalizer.

The game did not remained tied for long however as the Gulls scored seconds later to retake the lead. The gulls took the ball down the far side and threw it front where Brittany Bushey (Pittsford, Vt.) tipped it over Salve Regina goalkeeper Jessie Severino (Branford, Conn.) for a 3-2 Endicott advantage.

The Gulls carried the lead into half-time and never surrendered it the rest of the game.

The Seahawks had opportunities in the second half, getting in close but shots missed wide, or slid through the slot with no one able to get a stick on it.

The Gulls scored their final goal with 8:15 remaining courtesy of Sophia Cogliano (Saugus, Mass.).

Severino finished with 10 saves for Salve Regina while Bradley tallied 13 saves for the Gulls.

The Seahawks fall to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the CCC, while the Gulls improve their overall mark to 3-3 and 1-0 in conference play.

Salve Regina will be in action again this Saturday, September 19, when they host Gordon College at 5 p.m. in another CCC contest.  The Gulls will host Roger Williams at 1 p.m. on Saturday in their second CCC match of the season.
