MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - Erin Bibber (Charlton, Mass.) and Nicole Matarozzo (Wolfeboro, N.H.) scored unassisted first-half goals to lift the University of New England to a 2-0 victory over Salve Regina University in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) field hockey action Saturday evening (Oct. 18) at Gaudet Field.

The Nor'easters (10-5; 8-1 CCC) maintain a half-game lead over Endicott in the league standings, although the Gulls dealt University of New England its only conference loss. Salve Regina (11-5; 4-5 CCC) loses the season series to the Nor'easters.

Bibber scored her team-leading 12th goal of the season at the 16:15 mark, beating Salve Regina senior goalkeeper Murphy McCann (Westerly, R.I.).

Matarozzo flipped her stick around to backhand her shot in for her ninth goal of 2014. She ranks second on the Nor'easters in scoring right behind Bibber.

It was only the second shutout against the Seahawks all season; seven of Salve Regina's 11 victories have been shutouts.

Salve Regina was outshot by the visitors in the first half (9-to-5), before matching the Nor'easters on shots (9-to-9) in the second half. McCann finished with three saves while Holly Smith (Peabody, Mass.) denied all six shots she faced.

The Seahawks play next Saturday against Endicott, the third of a season-long four-game homestand. University of New England will meet the Gulls on Tuesday in Biddeford, Maine (6 p.m.).
