BRISTOL, R.I. – The Salve Regina University field hockey team defeated Roger Williams University, 2-0, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Tuesday evening.

Salve Regina stayed aggressive on the offensive end early on, outshooting the Hawks 8-0 over the first 10 minutes of play. The Seahawks maintained possession in their half of the field throughout most of the period.

The Hawk defense was able to keep the Seahawks off the scoreboard until the 21st minute. Lindsey Venuto (Foxboro, Mass.) put up a shot from the left side, but had it kicked away by Hawk keeper Melora Lavoie (Poland, Maine). However, Brooke Tolley (Brookside, N.J.) found the loose ball and hooked it into the right corner for her third goal of the season.

Shortly into the second half, Salve Regina added to its lead. Three minutes into the period, Erin Gendreau (Sandwich, Mass.) found Abigail Tepper (Foxboro, Mass.) right in front of the goal. Tepper knocked her shot to the right side, just past Lavoie to put Salve Regina up 2-0.

The closest opportunity for the Hawks to get on the scoreboard came in the 64th minute, when Meghan Curran (West Milford, N.J.) and Juliana Miccile (Upton, Mass.) notched back-to-back shots on goal. Yet Seahawk keeper Murphy McCann (Westerly, R.I.) turned away both opportunities to help guide Salve Regina to the win.

McCann had five saves for Salve Regina in the shutout, while Lavoie made seven stops in the loss.

Roger Williams (6-6, 3-3 CCC) will be off for the rest of the week, with the team hosting Lasell next Wednesday at 4 p.m. Salve Regina (8-3, 2-3 CCC) welcomes Nichols to Middletown on Saturday at 6 p.m.
