Seahawks fall to Bison

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – Senior Amanda Broughton (Plymouth, Mass.)scored a pair of goals to lead Nichols past host Salve Regina in Commonwealth Coast Conference field hockey action, Wednesday night.

Salve Regina slips to 6-7 on the year and 5-3 in the CCC while the Bison more to 4-10 on the season and 4-4 in the conference.

Late in the first half, Broughton took control on the ball in traffic in front of the cage after a Bison penalty corner to slid it past Salve Regina goalie junior Murphy McCann (Westerly, R.I.) to put the Bison up, 1-0. Sophomore Abigail Tepper (Foxoboro, Mass.) had a pair of scoring chances in the final minutes of the half but NC goalie junior Molly Melanson (Simsbury, Conn.) turned both shots away to keep the score 1-0 in favor of Nichols.

Senior Lisa Bucci (Irvington, N.Y.) had a pair of scoring chances to open the second but it was Nichols that got through once again as junior Jenn Townsend (Wethersfield, Conn.) gave the Bison a 2-0 lead just under 10 minutes into the second half. Junior Avery Orszulak (Springfield, Mass.) took a rebound off the pad of McCann after a pair of shots to give NC a 3-0 lead with 13 minutes to play.

Broughton scored her final goal of the game with just under seven minutes to play as she took a shot from the top of the circle to send the ball past a diving McCann and give Nichols the 4-0 win.

McCann made three saves in the cage while Melanson made eight stops in the shut out. Bucci led the Seahawks with four shots on goal while Orszulak paced the Bison with three shots.

The Bison get back to action on Saturday, Oct. 19 when they take on Endicott at 1 p.m. while the Seahawks travel to Johnson & Wales on Saturday for 10:30 a.m. non-conference contest.
