Seahawks take down Gulls

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – The Salve Regina field hockey team battled Commonwealth Coast Conference foe Endicott to a hard-fought 1-0 win Wednesday evening at Gaudet Field.

With the win, Salve Regina moves to 4-5 on the year and 3-1 in the conference while Endicott slips to 5-6 overall with a 2-2 conference slate.

After a scoreless first half that just 10 shots between the two teams, Salve Regina broke the scoreless tie with just under 23 minutes to play. Senior goalie Lizetta Solarik (Carmel, N.Y.) stopped a pair of shots from sophomore Lindsey Mazzola (Upton, Mass.) before freshman Courtney McMorrow (Montclair, N.J.) picked up the second rebound and shot the ball into the back of the cage to give Salve Regina a 1-0 lead.

Salve Regina had a pair of chances to increase its lead but both shots missed wide. Endicott had the ball going into its offensive zone with just under five minutes to play but was intercepted by Salve Regina to take away the scoring threat. The Gulls were awarded a penalty corner with a minute to play, but the Seahawk defense held strong to keep Endicott off the board and seal the 1-0 victory.

Seahawks goalie junior Murphy McCann (Westerly, R.I.) had five saves in the win while Solarik made six for the Gulls.

Salve Regina returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 5 when the Seahawks host neighboring Roger Williams in a CCC battle at 1 p.m.
