Seahawks land 23 on CCC Football Academic All-Conference Squad
NEWPORT, R.I. - One hundred thirty-three student-athletes were named to the Commonwealth Coast Football (CCC Football) Academic All-Conference Team as announced by the league office on Thursday afternoon. Salve Regina University had 23 members of its football team make the squad.
In order to be recognized as a member of the Academic All-Conference Team an athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.3 (on a 4.0 scale) and must also have attained sophomore academic status.
Among the 23 was Matt Messner (Midland Park, N.J.) who distinguished himself this fall by earning a selection to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) All-District® Team. Messner, the Defensive Player of the Year in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC), was the leader of the Salve Regina defense, finishing second in the conference in solo tackles (63), assisted tackles (47), and total tackles (110). His solo total ranked him 12th on the NCAA Division III leaderboard, while his total tackles placed him 18th. Messner was also great at getting into the backfield as he tied for third in the league in tackles for loss with 12. This season, the junior linebacker recorded 1.5 sacks, forced two fumbles, recovered a fumble, and broke up three pass attempts. He produced double-digit tackles in all but one game, including two games when he had 10 solo takedowns.
"Academic All-Conference is the definition of the type of student athlete we love here at Salve Regina," said head coach Kevin Gilmartin. "These are the men that lead us to be champions, on and off the field."
In addition to the 23 Seahawks, 53 more earned a similar honor with identical qualifications as members of seven other CCC sports - cross country (m/w), field hockey, soccer (m/w), tennis (w), and volleyball (w).
