Mauriello totals three TDs, 205 all-purpose yards, in six-point loss to Gulls

NEWPORT, R.I. (October 5, 2019) -- Salve Regina University sophomore Joey Mauriello (Colts Neck, N.J.) carried the ball 20 times and gained 163 yards on the ground while scoring three touchdowns (10, 42, 8), but Endicott College held on for a 30-24 victory at Toppa Field in Commonwealth Coast Football (CCC) action. The Gulls (4-1, 2-0 CCC) were led by quarterback Joe Kalosky (Plymouth, Conn.) who threw for 286 yards and two TDs while completing 31 of 39 passes to five different receivers. Salve Regina (1-4, 0-2 CCC) held leads of 7-0, 14-10, and 14-13 (at the half), but Endicott held on with a critical third-down conversion (8 of 17 on the day, 47 percent) after the Seahawks exhausted their second half timeouts with 2:24 remaining.

Salve Regina senior Jack Guelfi (Hopkinton, Mass.) forced a Kalosky fumble with his sack on the Gulls' first third down try and classmate Drew Balestrieri (Lynnfield, Mass.) recovered at the Endicott 14-yard line. Tyler McGovern (Attleboro, Mass.) completed a four-yard pass to Mike Nestor (Danvers, Mass.) before Mauriello drove through the middle for his 10-yard score. Angelo DiSanto (North Reading, Mass.) made the PAT kick for an early 7-0 lead.

Hakim Fleming (Bridgeport, Conn.) picked off a McGovern pass to set the Gulls up with 1st-and-10 at the Seahawk 31, but sack on second down by Zack Catarius (Sandwich, Mass.) pushed the Gulls back five yards and Nick DiCairano's (Trumbull, Conn.) 49-yard field goal attempt fell short.

With Endicott driving at the start of the second quarter, Kalosky executed a pair of third-down conversions both to Shea McManaway (Lisbon, Conn.) and eventually rewarded his sophomore receiver with a five-yard TD pass to tie the score (after DiCairano's PAT kick). DiCairano put the Gulls ahead, 10-7, with a 34-yard field goal and 3:03 left on the first-half clock.

Salve Regina's next drive started at 2:56 at its own 22, and McGovern completed four passes, two to Nestor, and one each to Danny Hoffman (Trumbull, Conn.) and Max DeVito (Cedar Grove, N.J.). On 4th-and-2 at the Endicott 42, Mauriello rushed outside of left tackle looking to gain a first down, and he scampered all the way into the end zone to retake the lead.

With 17 seconds left in the half, a personal foul penalty and a 15-yard Kalosky to Riley Shanley (Simsbury, Conn.) completion got the Gulls to the Seahawk 30-yard line. DiCairano added three more points with his 47-yard boot.

The Seahawks, who had won the pre-game coin toss and deferred to receive the second half opening kick-off, started at their own 13 after failing to return DiCairano's kick the landed and backspinned away from the returner before being downed. Three-and-out forced a DiSanto punt and Endicott marched 55 yards in six plays, capped by a Kalosky to McManaway 12-yard completion for the go-ahead score.

DiSanto had a 27-yard field on the next Seahawk drive which started in great field position thanks to Ty O'Loughlin's (Middletown, R.I.) 33-yard return to the Salve Regina 43, and a 15-yard face mask penalty pushed it closer to the Gulls' 42.

After Catarius' second sack (loss of 13 yards) made it 4th-and-19 for Endicott at its own 21, a roughing-the-kicker penalty put the Seahawk defense back on the field. Kalosky threw for one first-down completion, but Salve Regina's defense held and forced another punt.

Endicott began an 11-play, 72-yard scoring drive at the end of the third quarter and had a 10-point lead (27-17) when backup quarterback Dylan Bonifilio (Burlington, Mass.) found Shanley at the goal line. McGovern's first-down pass on the next Seahawk drive was picked off by Joseph Pagett (Newtown, Conn.). Endicott ate up 6:16 on the fourth-quarter clock before DiCairano's third successful field goal, a 24-yarder, boosted the lead to 13 points (30-17).

Mauriello had rushes of 13 and 37 yards before McGovern took off for an 11-yard gain on 4th-and-9 to the Gulls' 12-yard line. A four-yard pass to Hoffman set up Mauriello's final score as he fought off tacklers into the end zone.

Endicott's final drive started at its own 20, but then went back five yards on a delay of game penalty. A one-yard rush made it 2nd-and-14 and timeout Salve Regina with 2:37 on the clock. John Kenney (Wilmington, Mass.) rushed for 11 yards before another Seahawk timeout (2:24). Kalosky completed five yards to Kenney for the clinching first down.

Catarius led Salve Regina with 10 solo tackles including four for losses (two sacks) totaling minus-23 yards.
