Seahawks ground attack leads way to victory

THE LEAD:
Joey Mauriello ran for 209 yards and tied a single-game program record with five touchdowns to lead a Salve Regina ground game that racked up 462 rushing yards on their way to a convincing 62-35 win over Dean College in non-league football action on Saturday afternoon.

The Seahawks scored touchdowns on five of their first six possessions to take a 35-14 lead into the half and they never looked back.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Dean scored on the opening drive of the game when they drove 52 yards in eight plays and sophomore Terrell Watts (New Haven, Conn.) hit Kyle Johnson (Woodstock, N.Y.) for a two-yard score less than three minutes into the contest.

Salve Regina responded with touchdown runs of 13 and 14 yards, respectively, from Mauriello on back-to-back possession to take the 14-7 lead.

The Bulldogs knotted things up late in the first when Watts delivered a 17-yard strike to Errol Breaux (Marietta, Ga.) for the game-tying touchdown.

From that point on however, especially in the second quarter it was all Seahawks as they got two more touchdown runs from Mauriello – both four yards – and a 13-yard touchdown connection from Jack McGuire to Ryan Lawton.

After Salve Regina scored again coming out of halftime to make it 41-14, the Bulldogs got back on the board when they went 55 yards in seven plays – the final 25 coming on a Watts to senior Julian Burris (Rock Hill, S.C.) score up the left sideline.

Mauriello capped his career day with another score – a 19-yard jaunt that he started to the left and then brought back through the middle for a 48-20 Seahawk advantage.

Dean answered back quickly when a 52-yard Breaux kickoff return put the Bulldogs at the Salve Regina 30 yardline and D'Andre Cosby (White Plains, N.Y.) burst through the line and barreled his way over a Seahawk defender on his way to the endzone, bringing Dean close at 48-28.

It was not to be, however, as the Seahawks found paydirt two more times on the ground sandwiched around a Watts to sophomore Kameron Phuong (Covington, Ga.) from touchdown pass from ten yards out.
