Summary
NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University baseball scored its first six runs in first two innings on just one hit, and cruised to a 9-2 victory over visiting Worcester State University. The Lancers (10-17) loaded the bases in their first at bat with no outs; they plated a run on a double-play grounder as Seahawk starting pitcher Michael Mathews (West Hartford, Conn.) retired the final five batters he faced. In the bottom of the first, Salve Regina (14-10) also loaded the bases with no outs, scoring its first run on a walk to No. 4 hitter Zack Smith (New Canaan, Conn.). Sophomore outfielder Dylan Ketch (Clinton, Conn.) singled in two runs through the left side. After the shaky start on the mound, six Seahawk pitchers set down 20 of 22 Lancers until the eighth inning. Jonathan Lynch (Cumberland, R.I.) struck out two of his final three batters faced to give his fellow hurlers 11 Ks in the game.

Series and Streaks
Salve Regina holds a 10-8 edge over Worcester State in the all-time series after winning last two in a row. The teams split last year's home and away series with each winning 7-6 on the other's field. Salve Regina has a season-long six-game win streak.

Three Seahawk Stars of the Game

  1. Salve Regina sophomore Dylan Ketch (Clinton, Conn.) singled in two runs in the first inning and added a seventh-inning single while scoring twice in the game.
  2. Salve Regina senior Christian Vargas (Melbourne, Fla.) had two hits including a seventh-inning two-run double.
  3. Salve Regina sophomore Tom Beliveau (West Newbury, Mass.) pitched two innings with three strikeouts and one walk, no basehits.
