SEAHAWK BASEBALL RESULTS

Suffolk 16, Salve Regina 10
Newport, R.I. - Reynolds Field
Monday, April 25, 2016

NEWPORT, R.I. - Visiting Suffolk University used a seven run first inning to cruise to a 16-10 victory over the Salve Regina University baseball team in non-conference action Monday.

Series and Streaks
This was the 15th meeting between Salve Regina and Suffolk. The Rams now own an 11-4 record in the all-time series.

Three Seahawk Stars of the Day
1 – Salve Regina sophomore Damon Raposa (Cranston, R.I.) was 3-5 with four RBI, and came just a homerun short of batting for the cycle.
2 – Salve Regina junior Hunter Sleeper (Arlington, Mass.) had just one at-bat in the game but made the most of it, belting a three run homer off the first pitch he saw.
3 – Salve Regina freshman Zach Smith (New Canaan, Conn.) went 2-4 with a two run homer in bottom of the seventh.

Key Stat of the Day
The Rams scored seven runs in the first inning on five hits and three Seahawk errors. The Seahawks committed four errors in total on the afternoon.

Turning Point
The Seahawks have had some wild comebacks of late so even leading 7-0 early on the Rams could not rest on their lead. They added one run in the second and two more in the third to lead 10-3. That remained the score until the top of the sixth when Suffolk added five more runs for a 15-3 lead that put the game out of reach. Sean Cameron (Milford, Conn.) doubled scoring Luke Ronchi (Randolph, N.J.). Then Rob Marks singled scoring both Sean Cameron (Milford, Conn.) and Matt Brenner (Eliot, Maine). Finally Julian Plana homered, just the second of his career and first this season, to drive in two runs and a 15-3 lead.

Quick Hits

  • The Seahawks defeated the Rams last season thanks to a 5-0 first inning. This time the Rams returned the favor by scoring seven in the opening frame.
  • Charles Batchelder (Shrewsbury, Mass.) went five innings, the only pitcher to go more than two innings for either team, earning his first win of the season, now 1-0.
  • Kyle Lefelar (Potomac, Md.) takes the loss for Salve Regina, going just the first inning, allowing seven runs, none earned however, to fall to 1-1 on the season.
