LAKELAND, Fla. - The Presidents rallied for victories in both ends of a doubleheader against Salve Regina (R.I.) to kick off the Florida trip with 5-3 and 10-8 wins.

Derek Helbing picked up the save in both games, the first two of his career after adding pitching duties to his repertoire this season. In the first game, he entered in relief of starter Riley Groves to begin the seventh inning, walking one, hitting a batter and striking out one in earning his first save. The junior closed out the second game with a 1.0 inning appearance, allowing two hits and a run before getting a double-play ball and closing out the game in relief of Garrett Harstine who earned his first career win with 0.1 inning, forcing a fly out against the lone batter he faced.

Series and Streaks
Salve Regina and Washington & Jefferson meet for the first time in any sport.

Three Seahawk Stars of the Day
1 – Salve Regina freshman Tristan Dacey (Wyckoff, N.J.) - debuted with four hits in seven at bats including an RBI single in the last inning of second game.
2 – Salve Regina senior Ryan Kelly (Waldwick, N.J.) - three for six with a double, two runs scored, and two runs batted in.
3 – Salve Regina sophomore Alex Perry (No. Attleboro, Mass.) - 2015 national leader in RBI per game drove in three runs in two games with a pair of doubles.

Key Stat of the Day
Salve Regina pitchers struck out 13 Presidents in 13 innings (9.00 K/g).

Turning Points
After retiring the leadoff batter in the bottom of the sixth of first game (and leading 3-1), Seahawk starting pitcher Cory Poplawski (Syracuse, N.Y.) struck out the next President, but the ninth batter in the order reached on a wild pitch, which led to a four-run outburst and eventual 5-3 victory for Washington & Jefferson.

Quick Hits

  • Salve Regina started three freshmen in first game and the same plus one more in the second game.
  • Poplawski finished with a complete-game effort in the opener while striking out five.
  • Six pitchers took the mound in second game for Salve Regina, including four in the sixth inning.
  • Sophomore Jimmy Fitzgerald (Canton, Mass.) took the mound for his first collegiate start; in 2015 all appearances were in relief including three saves.
  • Seahawk batters, who outhit their opponents (18 to 16), were set down in order in just one inning all day (third frame of second game).

Quotes
"With strength of schedule being an such an important determinant in having an at-large bid (for the NCAAs), it gives us an opportunity to do two things. If we went down (here) playing teams that were average or below average, our players would get the sense that we've accomplished something." - Salve Regina head coach Eric Cirella on playing best opponents available
