NEWPORT, R.I. - Freshman Alex Perry (No. Attleboro, Mass.) drove in four runs with a pair of doubles to support the six-pitcher effort as Salve Regina University baseball blanked UMass Dartmouth, 7-0, on Reynolds Field in non-league action.
The shutout victory made a winner out of starter Billy Humes (East Rockaway, N.Y.) (2-0) as the Seahawks improve to 10-7 on the season. Corsairs' starter Aaron Chouinard (Swansea, Mass.), who went 6.1 innings without a decision in a 2-0 win over the Seahawks last season, went 5.2 innings in this outing and gave up all seven runs to drop to 1-2 while his team falls to 10-6.
Chouinard gave up basehits to the first four Seahawks he faced. Junior Ryan Kelly (Waldwick, N.J.) singled to right field off the lefty starter. Senior Joe Haley (No. Kingstown, R.I.) drove in the game's first run with an RBI double to left field. Perry followed with his first two-run double, this to right center, to bring home John Militano (Miller Place, N.Y.) and Haley.
Militano led off the third with a base on balls, moved to third on a single by Haley, and both scored on Perry's second double of the game.
Humes pitched four complete innings allowing no hits, three walks, and striking out four Corsairs.
Josh Monson (Bridgewater, Mass.) opened the fifth and gave up a double to lead off batter Ben Monteiro (Swansea, Mass.). The senior rightfielder was gunned down at third trying to stretch it to a triple with Perry throwing to shortstop Daniel Donohue (Westbury, N.Y.) who relayed to Haley at third.
Two more basehits and an error loaded the bases with Corsairs with one out. Mike Schuermann (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) faced the top of the order in relief and struck out Ryan Medeiros (Acushnet, Mass.) before ending the frame on a fielder's choice grounder.
Donohue drilled a solo homerun to right field, his first of 2015, with one out in the sixth to make the score 7-0. UMass Dartmouth relief pitchers - Matt Russell (Townsend, Mass.) and Matt Cronin (Framingham, Mass.) - retired all seven batters they faced.
Matt Wood (Walpole, N.H.), Dylan Jepsen (Sutton, Mass.), and Alex Croce (Rumford, R.I.) finished the final four innings in relief for Salve Regina, completing the first shutout of the season for the Seahawks.
Salve Regina plays another non-league contest at Wheaton (Mass.) on Thursday; the Corsairs return to Little East Conference action on Saturday at Plymouth State.
