Salve Regina sweeps Wentworth in Newport

NEWPORT, R.I. – Junior Daniel Donohue (Westbury, N.Y.) and senior Dominic Di Sano (Central Falls, N.Y.) combined to go 9-for-16 with five RBI to help pace the Salve Regina baseball team to a Commonwealth Coast Conference sweep of Wentworth as the Seahawks took the opener, 6-4 before earning an 8-1 win in the nightcap.

Wentworth, which was the home team on the scoreboard in both games, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the opener as junior Joe Hulme (Tewksbury, Mass.) had an RBI, ground-rule double and sophomoreSam McManus (Hopkinton, N.H.) delivered a sacrifice fly.

The Seahawks would tie the game up in the top of the second when Di Sano, who had a leadoff double, scored on a wild pitch and senior Anthony Conte (Georgetown, Mass.) executed a safety squeeze that scored freshman Hunter Sleeper (Arlington, Mass.). An inning later Salve Regina took a 3-2 lead when junior Tim Harris (Southbury, Conn.) hit a two-out double, which scored Di Sano.

Wentworth took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third, thanks to a pair of bases-loaded walks as sophomoreJohnny Ryan (Brandt Rock, Mass.) and freshman Christian Ferri (Bloomfield, N.J.) each drove in a run with a walk. However, the Leopards were unable to add to their lead, leaving the bases loaded.

In the top of the fourth, Salve Regina knotted the game at 4-all on an RBI single from Donohue and the Seahawks took a 6-4 lead in the top of the sixth when Sleeper bunted home senior Tyler Colby (Easton, Conn.) and Donohue had an RBI single.

Junior Kyle Pheland (North Scituate, R.I.) earned the win (3-1) as he allowed four runs on six hits, walked five, and struck out three in five innings of work, Sophomore Mike Schuermann (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) pitched an inning and a third of scoreless ball before sophomore John McDermott (Bedford Hills, N.Y.) earned his first save of the season retiring the two batters he faced. Donohue was 2-for-4 with two RBI, Di Sano was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored, and Harris was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Wentworth junior Justin Voytek (New Milford, Conn.) took the loss (1-1) as he allowed two runs on three hits in two innings of work in relief of junior Dakota Baird (Bermuda Dunes, Calif.). Baird allowing four runs on eight hits and struck out eight over five innings. Offensively, junior Jake Mailman (Medway, Mass.) was 2-for-2 with a pair of walks.

Game two saw Salve Regina score three runs in the top of the second inning as Conte had an RBI double and Donohue delivered a two-run double.

The Leopards cut the lead to 3-1 in the fourth as junior Anthony Matera (Trumbull, Conn.) led off with a single and went to second when Hulme was hit by a pitch. Both players moved up 90 feet on a passed ball and Matera came in to score on a sacrifice fly from Mailman.

Salve Regina scored three runs in the top of the fifth, thanks to back-to-back home runs. Donohue led off with a single and stole second before sophomore Ryan Kelly (Waldwick, N.J.) hit a home run. A batter later Di Sano followed with his second home run of the season to make it a 6-1 game.

In the seventh inning the Seahawks scored a pair of runs on groundouts as Colby and junior Joe Haley (North Kingstown, R.I.) each drove in runs.

Freshman Cole Tretter (East Lyme, Conn.) picked up his third win of the season (3-0) as he allowed one run on three hits and struck out five in 5.1 innings. Schuermann pitched two-thirds of in inning and recorded a strikeout. Senior Zach Zidelis (Northbridge, Mass.) allowed one hit, walked one, and struck out one in the seventh inning. Offensively, Donohue was 3-for-4 with two RBI, Di Sano was 2-for-4 and freshman Alek Kucich (Old Brookville, N.Y.) and Conte were each 2-for-3.

Sophomore Corey Jerolmon (New Milford, Conn.) took the loss (1-1) for the Leopards as he allowed six runs on eight hits in five innings. Freshman Chris Hayes (Medford, Mass.) allowed one hit in the sixth inning and sophomore Ryan Daniels (Bristol, R.I.) allowed a pair of runs in the seventh. Offensively, Matera had two of the Black & Gold's four hits.

Salve Regina improves to 15-7 overall and 6-3 in CCC play. The Seahawks host Western New England in a single game tomorrow. Wentworth falls to 9-11 (2-6) and is at Eastern Nazarene for a doubleheader on Tuesday.
