Hatch Brown Memorial Trophy

Summary

Saturday, September 14:

Lots of racing on the Charles River with 3 divisions and 19 teams enjoying a funky 5-12 knot southerly with a bit of mid-afternoon rain thrown in on top. The regatta honors Hatch Brown who was a star sailor for BU and won A Division at Nationals. Hatch also won numerous national and continental championships but is most well known as the third Sailing Master at MIT. For 29 years Hatch coached the teams, maintained the NEISA schedule, and also was responsible for teaching somewhere between 80 and 90 thousand students how to sail at the MIT Sailing Pavilion. Hatch was a legend in so many different ways and truly gave his entire lifetime to making the sport better and turning on people to the sport who would otherwise never have tried it.

MIT and BU co-hosted this event with MIT in charge of providing boats as well as running races and BU responsible for finish boat and entering scores. Eight races were completed in all three divisions today.

Sunday, September 15:

Conditions were nothing short of spectacular on the Charles River today. A lightish WNW breeze gave way to eventually more pressure from the west as the land heated up. The Jumbos from Tufts University found the sailing to their liking and hauled in the Bulldogs from Yale. However, a protest didn't go their way and Yale took away the trophy with very consistent performances in all divisions for a three point margin. Fifteen races were finished overall and Mack Fox with Brian Nelson took A Division honors for the Coast Guard Academy. Ansgar Jordan with Maria Brush took B Divison for Tufts. And, Luke Arnone sailing with Claudia Loiacono took C Division for Yale.

Many thanks to Mike Kalin for tweaking buoys both days, Stew Craig on dock and boat duties, and Miss Lucinda for barking at the Race Horn. BU sailing team volunteers did a fantastic job and kept up with the finishes and entering scores in Tech Score.

Score history

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
