Seahawks land 33 on Fall Academic All-CCC
NEWPORT, R.I. – Salve Regina University has landed 33 student-athletes on the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) 2012 Fall Academic All-Conference Team, announced Monday, January 28, by Commissioner Gregg M. Kaye.
The Academic All-Conference Team consists of any starter or significant reserve who has attained at least sophomore status and has maintained an overall minimum GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00. This is the first time the honor has been separated into two seasons - fall and spring. In total, 317 student-athletes representing all 10 member institutions were selected for the Fall Academic All-Conference Team.
Of the honorees, 69 were either first team, second team, or honorable mention All-CCC selections in their sport this past fall.
Also noteworthy is that the Athlete(s) of the Year in five of the CCC fall sports received Academic All-Conference laurels, including women's cross country Runner of the Year Hannah Zydanowicz (Roger Williams), field hockey Co-Offensive Player of the Year Emily Widdison (Nichols), field hockey Defensive Player of the Year Taylor Teixeira (Endicott), women's soccer Offensive Player of the Year Kaitlyn Birrell (Salve Regina), women's soccer Defensive Player of the Year Caitlin Peters (Endicott), women's tennis Player of the Year Anna Dyakiv (Nichols), and volleyball Player of the Year Paige Curran (Univ. of New England).
Birrell earned her Offensive Player of the Year honor in soccer for the second-straight season while she currently plays her final season in basketball. On the hardwood, Birrell was named the Defensive Player of the Year in the Commonwealth Coast Conference for the 2011-12 season while leading the Seahawks to their second-straight title.
