Resocialization of Collegiate Sport: Action Plan Considerations

NCAA Resocialization of Collegiate Sport: Developing Standards for Practice and Competition

Will fall varsity sports (cross country, field hockey, football, equestrian, sailing, soccer, tennis, volleyball) be competing in the fall of 2020?
No outside competition for the fall semester. Teams will be allowed to practice within the parameters of the state and CDC guidelines, Salve Regina policies and NCAA resocialization plan.

What about club sports?
Some club sports (men's and women's rugby) will be allowed to practice IF following all social distancing requirements. Abbreviated practices will be allowed following state, CDC, school and national organization requirements. Club sports will not compete in the fall. All competition will be moved to the spring. Karate, cheer and swimming will not have fall seasons.

What does it mean that the CCC has suspended their season?
The Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) has postponed fall sports until the spring – circumstances permitting. There will be no CCC championships until the spring. Institutions are allowed to practice and compete as they deem safe.

Will fall sports move to spring?
The hope is that we can schedule fall sport competitions in the spring, even if an abbreviated number of contests.

Can teams still practice together? Can the coaches be present?
Yes, under the guidelines of the state, CDC, NCAA, and the university. We are committed to providing robust training opportunities for all student-athletes during this challenging time.

Season Length
The NCAA has allowed that every team will have 114 days of practice/competition. This will span both semesters. Per revised NCAA rules, students will not use a season of eligibility if their team does not compete during the traditional sport season. NCAA Division III has also provided flexibility in the playing season (114 days for athletically related activities) for all sports in 2020-21.

Will the student-athletes lose a year of NCAA eligibility if they practice with the team?
No, student-athletes will not lose a season of eligibility if they practice and not compete. The NCAA granted a blanket waiver for this. More details can be found at: http://www.ncaa.org/about/resources/media-center/news/diii-administrative-committee-approves-blanket-waivers-participation

Competition
All student-athletes whose sports fail to complete more than 50% of their maximum contests/dates of competition due to COVID-19 will receive a season-of-competition waiver to ensure they can have an opportunity for four meaningful seasons of participation.

What about winter sports teams (basketball and hockey) during the fall of 2020?
Fall practices (under specific guidelines) will be permitted. Winter competition may start after January 1, 2021.

What about spring sports (baseball, lacrosse, softball, equestrian, sailing, tennis, track and field)?
Spring sports will be allowed to practice during the fall under the guidelines set forth by the state, CDC, Salve Regina University and NCAA. No fall competitions or scrimmages outside of Salve Regina.

Can student-athletes use locker rooms and laundry facilities?
At this point in time, locker room facilities will not be open for students or staff. Laundry facilities will be determined later.

Do fall sport student-athletes still move in early?
No. All student athletes will return with their class on their assigned day and time.

What about all of the medical paperwork for participation?
All student-athletes will still need to complete all medical requirements in order to practice with the team. The required date has been moved until August 20. Requirements can be found on SportsWare.

Sports Medicine
Sport Medicine and the Athletic Trainers will still be available. There will be entrance by appointment and social distancing requirements.

Will student-athletes still have priority registration?
Yes. We will still have student-athletes register at the front of their class due to practice scheduling issues.

There will be a 14-day quarantine for international student-athletes who are coming from their home country. Aida Neary, Director of International Office, will be contacting all international students.

Specific States
Students that are coming from states that Rhode Island requires a 14-day quarantine will also need to certify that they quarantined.

Testing
All faculty, staff and students will be offered tests at the start of the fall semester so the community has a baseline. Surveillance (random sampling) testing will occur throughout the semester.
