Demeo, Owen pace Seahawks in regional championship

BRUNSWICK, Maine – Senior Alex Demeo (Burlington, Mass.) and junior Olivia Owen (Weymouth, Mass.) led Salve Regina to a 26th place finish against a field of nearly 60 teams at the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championship at Bowdoin College on Saturday.

The frontrunners, who were practically interchangeable in most meets this fall, finished less than 10 seconds apart in their final 6,000-meter race of the season. Demeo crossed the line at 24:30.6, while Owen finished at 24:39.5. Freshmen Christina Moran (Oceanside, N.Y.) and Cate Norton (Newtown, Conn.) and sophomore Sydney DeCesare (Johnston, R.I.) completed the scoring for Salve Regina.

There were 57 complete teams and 399 runners in the race.

Coast Guard sophomore Kaitlyn Mooney cruised to a commanding win, crossing the finish line at 20:43.8. (The runner-up, Brandeis senior Emily Bryson, finished 20 seconds later.) The Massachusetts Institute of Technology captured the team title with a score of 87 points. Middlebury College finished second with 108; Williams College was third with 115.
