Owen sets pace for Seahawks at Connecticut College Invitational

WATERFORD, Conn. – Junior captain Olivia Owen (Weymouth, Mass.) had a personal-best performance at 6,000 meters to lead the Salve Regina women's cross country team at the Connecticut College Invitational on Saturday.

Owen dropped 20 seconds from her previous best at 6K – and 50 seconds from her performance in this same meet a year ago – to place inside the top 100 in a field that included national-caliber competition. The grass course at Harkness State Park, soaked and softened by heavy rain on Thursday and continued precipitation on race day, still yielded fast times. Owen crossed the finish line at 23:40.7.

The other Seahawk scorers also managed season-best performances, with freshmen Christina Moran (Oceanside, N.Y.) and Cate Norton (Newtown, Conn.) both improving their personal-best times at the championship distance.

The meet included five programs ranked in the most recent national poll from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, and several others with regional rankings. No. 16 Middlebury topped No. 14 Dickinson – 67-72 – for the team title. No. 11 Tufts was third with 82 points. The field of 25 teams also featured No. 8 Williams and No. 29 Coast Guard.

Coast Guard sophomore Kaitlyn Mooney was first across the finish line with a time of 21:09.0, outrunning TCNJ senior Natalie Cooper, who crossed at 21:10.2. The top five women in the field all managed to break 22 minutes. There were 307 runners in the race.

Salve Regina returns to action at the Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship on October 27.
