Moran paces Seahawks at Pop Crowell Invitational

WENHAM, Mass. – Freshman Christina Moran (Oceanside, N.Y.) led a shorthanded Seahawk squad to a sixth-place finish in the Pop Crowell Invitational at Gordon College on Saturday.

With the team's top harriers taking a week off from racing, Moran and classmate Cate Norton (Newtown, Conn.) moved into the No. 1 and No. 2 jobs for Salve Regina. Both freshmen gained good position off the starting line and were well inside the top 20 after the opening loops of the quad in the center of the Gordon campus. Moran would hold her spot throughout, finishing her first collegiate 6,000-meter race at 24:47.9. She placed 13th of 149 runners.

Norton and junior Cianna Lynch (Cranston, R.I.) coordinated their efforts in the trails that made up the majority of the race, trading places – and paces – in the middle miles. Norton finished at 25:42.1, with Lynch at 25:49.4. Seniors Annie Mozzer (Agawam, Mass.) and Ashley Schafer (Manorville, N.Y.) completed the scoring for Salve Regina.

The University of New England won the team title behind a 1-2 finish from seniors Emily Wasina and Kiera Murray. The Nor'easters claimed a convincing win over second-place Eastern Connecticut. There were 15 complete teams – and 17 programs in total – in the meet.

Gordon College will host the Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship later this season. The meet on Saturday afforded Salve Regina – and the five other CCC schools in the field – an opportunity to preview the course that they will run on Oct. 27.
