Varone earns CCC rookie of the year
BIDDEFORD, Maine – Freshman Victoria Varone (Providence, R.I.) finished third overall to lead Salve Regina to a third-place finish in the Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship on Saturday.
The Seahawks posted a team score of 63 to finish behind the University of New England (39) and Roger Williams University (41). The Nor'Easters placed five runners in the top 11 to defend the CCC championship. Roger Williams had three runners in the top 10 and all five scorers in the top 15.
Varone battled with Erin Haynes of Endicott, Jamie Wandzilak of Roger Williams and several runners from UNE on the first loop around Rotary Park. Haynes and Varone pulled away on the second loop, with the Endicott junior crossing the finish line in 24:17. Varone finished in 24:32 to earn a spot on the all-conference team and the CCC's Rookie of the Year Award. Roger Williams junior Hannah Zydanowicz was the overall winner, completing the 6K course in 23:15.
Freshman Amy Irving (Bohemia, N.Y.), senior Ema Waldschmidt (Verbank, N.Y.), freshman Nicole Schafer (Manorville, N.Y.) and freshman Alannah O'Rourke (Rockville Centre, N.Y) were the other scorers for Salve Regina. Irving finished at 25:55, with Waldschmidt at 26:06, Schafer at 26:12 and O'Rourke at 26:22. Sophomore Rachel Gedansky (Tolland, Conn.) and senior Kayley Ryan (Portland, Conn.) were the Seahawks' sixth and seventh runners at 26:23 and 26:31.
