Great showing for Seahawks at Corsair invite

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Salve Regina freshman Victoria Varone (Providence, R.I.) led the Seahawks to a sixth-place finish in the UMass Dartmouth Invitational on Saturday. The Seahawks had finished no better than 10th in their last 10 appearances in North Dartmouth. 

Varone battled with top runners from Brandeis University, Keene State College and Rowan University throughout the flat, fast 5,000-meter course, crossing the finish line in 19:16. Bridgewater State University alumna Molly Roulillard, running unattached, won the race in 18:09. 

Senior Ema Waldschmidt (Verbank, N.Y.), sophomore Rachel Gedansky (Tolland, Conn.,), senior Kayley Ryan (Portland, Conn.) and freshman Nicole Schafer (Manorville, N.Y.) were the Seahawks' other scorers, finishing at 19:49, 20:07, 20:12 and 20:26. Freshman Andrea Ricci (Ashford, Conn.), freshman Jessica Graham (Lowell, Mass.) and sophomore Shannon Holden (Hingham, Mass.) also represented Salve Regina in the varsity race, running 20:36, 20:53 and 21:02. 

Rowan, ranked No. 9 in the Atlantic Region in the most recent USTFCCCA cross country rankings, took the team title with a score of 45. Brandeis was second with 51 points, and Keene State, ranked No. 8 in the New England Region, was third with 113. 

"The UMass Dartmouth Invitational is known for attracting high quality competition, and this year was no exception," said head coach Dave Kraszewski. "Our runners knew they needed to step up to be competitive today, and I could not be more pleased with the results. We ran well against some very good teams."  

In the sub-varsity race, freshman Alannah O'Rourke (Rockville Centre, N.Y.), sophomore Jackie Ofria (Manchester, Conn.) and freshman Taylor Ricker (Rocky Point, N.Y.) led the Seahawks to a third-place finish behind Rowan and Keene State. O'Rourke crossed the finish line in 20:41, placing eighth in the field of 130 runners, while Ofria and Ricker finished at 20:54 and 21:10. 

Senior Danielle Schioppo (North Haven, Conn.) finished at 21:11 and sophomore Lea Cure finished at 21:43 to round out the scoring five, with sophomore Megan Sylvia (Westerly, R.I.) and senior Sabrina Parisi (Gloucester, Mass.) running in the sixth and seventh spots at 21:55 and 22:33.
