Seahawks soar in CCC finale
NEWPORT, R.I. – The Salve Regina women's volleyball team closed out its regular season Commonwealth Coast Conference schedule with a 3-0 win over visiting Western New England by set scores of 25-15, 25-19, 25-21, Tuesday evening.
With the victory, the Seahawks post a 7-1 CCC record for the year while improving to 24-3 overall. With the loss, Golden Bears move to 19-8 on the season and 4-3 in the conference.
Junior Jennifer Duggan (Merrimack, N.H.) led the team with nine kills in the three sets while senior Clare Adams (New Concord, Ohio) and junior Dianna Tauro (Melrose, Mass.) each had 11 digs. Junior Taylor Violet (Tiverton, R.I.) handed out a match-high 26 assists for the Seahawks.
Senior Tyler Singh (Dumont, N.J.) led the Golden Bears offense with nine kills while junior Grace Kucharski (Avon, Conn.) had a match-high 17 digs for WNE.
Salve Regina and Western New England were knotted at 8-8 before the Seahawks went on a 13-3 run to take a 21-11 lead and control of the first set. Adams finished off the first set with a service ace to give Salve Regina a 1-0 lead in the match with the 25-15 win.
The Seahawks raced out to a 6-2 lead to open the second set before Western New England slowly chipped away at the lead to pull within one at 12-11. Salve Regina used a 5-1 run to re-take a five-point lead at 17-12. The Golden Bears once again battled back and pulled to within three at 20-17, but the Seahawks closed out the set on a 5-2 run to take the second set, 25-19.
Western New England took a slight 6-5 lead to open the third and final set before the Seahawks scored seven-straight points to build a 12-6 lead. After a WNE service error gave the ball back to Salve Regina with the first match-point of the evening, the Golden Bears battled back with three-straight points to cut the Seahawk lead to three, 24-21, but a Golden Bear attack error gave the final point to Salve Regina to end the third set, 25-21.
Western New England returns to the court on Thursday, October 31 to face Worcester State before closing out its regular season on Saturday against CCC opponent, Wentworth at 1 p.m. Salve Regina ends its regular season on Thursday as the Seahawks travel to Boston, Mass. to take on Emmanuel at 7 p.m. The Seahawks are currently first in the CCC and await the final match between Roger Williams and University of New England to learn their seeding for the 2013 CCC Championship.
