Seahawks keep rolling in women's volleyball

NEWPORT, R.I. - The Salve Regina University women's volleyball team continued its home dominance during its homecoming weekend match with Wentworth Institute of Technology, defeating the Leopards 3-1 (25-15, 28-30, 25-12, 25-18) in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action on Saturday.

Senior outside hitter Clare Adams (New Concord, Ohio) led the attack with a match-high 19 kills in her four sets; she added 13 digs. Junior Jennifer Duggan (Merrimack, N.H.) joined Adams in double-double totals with 14 kills and 10 digs in four sets. Katelyn Beauregard (Dartmouth, Mass.) rounded the attack with 10 kills. Junior Taylor Violet (Tiverton, R.I.) set the table successfully on 48 attacks.

Dianna Tauro (Melrose, Mass.) led all players with 16 digs.

Wentworth (9-5; 1-1 CCC) was led by sophomore outside hitter Hannah Bailey (Plymouth, Mass.) who provided 14 kills and nine digs. Freshman Sheena Dignean (Constantia, N.Y.) had 12 kills and nine digs for the Leopards.

In the first set, after a bad set off a serve, Salve Regina (15-1; 2-0 CCC) rolled off four straight points. Junior Erin McGloin (West Islip, N.Y.) put the Seahawks in control with a kill from the middle off a set from Violet. Violet served the next points that went Salve Regina's way.

Salve Regina had a couple more four-point streaks in the first set before finishing with a Duggan kill on set point to win by 10.

Set two was a nip and tuck affair with neither team serving more than three consecutive points. Freshman setter Amanda Hutton (Monroe, N.Y.) clinched the set for Wentworth with a service ace on the set's 58th point.

Hutton produced a service error on the first point of the third set and Salve Regina capitalized with an ace from Violet (three in the match) and a kill from Duggan for a quick 3-0 lead. After another Leopard service error gave the Seahawks a 16-12 lead, sophomore Chrissy Fraga (Milford, Mass.) did not relinquish her serve as Salve Regina won the next nine points, highlighted by four kills from Adams, for a two sets to one advantage.

Fraga's serve in set four again provided a three-point streak for the Seahawks. Adams closed out the set with an ace among her three service points.

Salve Regina finishes September with a 12-1 mark, its best single-month record ever. The Seahawks play another Commonwealth Coast Conference match at Gordon College on Tuesday (7 p.m.). Wentworth will be nearby at Endicott College at the same time.
