Women's volleyball sweeps tri-match on homecoming

NEWPORT, R.I. – The Salve Regina women's volleyball team scored back-to-back victories against Wheaton College, 3-1 (25-19, 8-25, 25-16, 25-11), and Lesley College, 3-0 (25-12, 25-14, 25-18), Saturday on Alumni Homecoming & Family Weekend at the Rodgers Recreation Center. Wheaton defeated Lesley in straight sets (25-19, 25-19, 25-19) as part of the tri-match. The Seahawks have now won six straight matches, improving to 8-5 on the season, while the Lyons move to 5-9 and the Lynx drop to 2-7.

In the first match of the afternoon, the Seahawks ousted the Lyons in four sets. Junior Clare Adams (New Concord, Ohio) had another strong performance on the court for Salve Regina. After taking a 1-0 lead, the Lyons struck back against the Seahawks, easily winning the second set, 25-8. The Seahawks roared back, led by sophomores Katelyn Beauregard (Dartmouth, Mass.) and Jennifer Duggan (Merrimack, N.H.), and won the next two sets by at least a 10-point margin.

Despite a quick turnaround, Wheaton College was able to rebound and sweep their second match against Lesley College. Smaller in size and numbers, the Lynx team showed a strong will to fight against a stronger Lyons squad, losing by only six points in each game.  Freshman Jackie Kochiss (Milford, Conn.) recorded the best serving performance of all three matches, hitting six aces.

In the final match of the day, a rested Seahawks lineup overpowered the Lynx in straight sets. Sophomore Tara Kuck (Huntington Station, N.Y.) and freshman Chrissy Fraga (Milford, Mass.) led the way in kills for the Seahawks. Salve Regina cruised throughout the match, allowing an opportunity for all players to see the court.

The Lyons travel to Smith College on Tuesday for a match against the Pioneers at 7 p.m., while the Lynx return to action at home against UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday at 8 p.m. The Seahawks head west to face the Western New England University Golden Bears on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
