Lyons rally past Seahawks in five sets, 3-2

NEWPORT, R.I. - Sophomore Miranda Howitt (San Francisco, Calif.) recorded a match-high 34 kills to lead Wheaton (Mass.) College to a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Salve Regina University in non-conference volleyball action Thursday night at Rodgers Recreation Center.

 

Junior Becca Rose (Sudbury, Mass.) added 60 assists and 13 digs for the Lyons, who rallied back from a two games to one deficit to earn their sixth win of the season (6-8) and improve to 3-1 all-time against Salve Regina (5-9). Sophomore Julianne Barry (Randolph, Mass.) tallied a team-high 17 kills and nine blocks (four solo) for the Seahawks, who saw their four-match win streak come to a halt.

 

Salve Regina earned a 34-32 win in the first game, but the Lyons evened the match at one by edging the home team 26-24 in the second game. The Seahawks played their best game of the match in game three en route to a 25-15 win before the Lyons captured games four (25-19) and five (15-8). In the fifth game, the Lyons posted a .333 hitting percentage, raced out o a 7-0 lead, and never looked back.

 

Senior Lauren Kraus (Westboro, Mass.) and sophomore Lauren McGrath (Wading River, N.Y.) each finished with 12 kills for Wheaton while sophomore Emily Davisson (Carpinteria, Calif.) posted 24 digs.

 

For the Seahawks, freshman Megan Clancy (Chelmsford, Mass.) recorded a match-high 28 digs while junior Lisa Zabel (Madison, Conn.) notched 27 assists and senior Deanna Salter (Westwood, Mass.) had 11 kills and 14 digs.

 

The Seahawks return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 30 when they play at Roger Williams at 7 p.m.
