Madison Stanley headlines Seahawks with All-CCC track and field honors
WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD ALL-CCC AWARD HISTORY
NEWPORT, R.I. (May 8, 2019) -- Salve Regina University junior Madison Stanley (Warwick, R.I.) has been selected as the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Runner of the Year for Women's Track and Field by the league's head coaches.
"Although the competition was stiff, I am not surprised that Madison was named the conference's runner of the year," says her head coach Matthew Hird. "Not only is she a very talented athlete but she does everything right. She is first to practice and last to leave every day. She is totally involved in her sport, scrounging the Internet for information on her competitors and always asking how she can become better. She is critical of her performances, but knows to leave them in the past and have a positive view of the future. Most importantly, Madison is a competitor. She is constantly looking for opportunities to test herself against others, always pushing to get the best from herself. Madison is the quintessential athlete who. in addition to her achievements, always supports her teammates and views her achievements more as contributions to team success than as personal victories. She is truly deserving of the Track AOY award and opposing coaches have demonstrated that they agree."
The conference also recognized its All-Conference Teams. The All-Conference Teams consisted of the medal winners in each of the 19 events at the CCC Championship. Gold medalists were named First Team All-CCC members with silver and bronze medalists named to the Second and Third Teams, respectively. Forty-one individuals in total were recognized.
Roger Williams' championship performance was highlighted by the efforts of two of the conference's major award winners. Senior Savannah Fox Tree-McGrath (Billerica, Mass.) repeated her 2018 performance by being named Field Performer of the Year, while her teammate, freshman Shirah Strock (Castleton, N.Y.), was voted the Rookie Field Performer of the Year. Salve Regina's Madison Stanley (Warwick, R.I.) was selected as the Runner of the Year and Gordon's Emma Shearer (Hampden, Maine) was picked as the Rookie Runner of the Year. Endicott senior Abigail Keim (Williston, Vt.) was this year's CCC Scholar-Athlete award winner, while the Gulls were also the recipients of the Team Sportsmanship award. Endicott head coach Spencer Lange and Roger Williams head coach Sean Livingston were both named CCC Coach of the Year.
Seventeen student-athletes earned All-Conference recognition in multiple events with 11 of them earning their top honors as first teamers. Included in that group were Stanley and Fox Tree-McGrath. Stanley was a triple-gold recipient as she won the 200 meter and was part of Salve Regina's first-place 4x100 and 4x400 teams. She also picked up a silver medal in the 100 and a bronze in the triple jump. Fox Tree-McGrath was the winner of the javelin throw and the silver medalist in the high jump.
In addition to Stanley, Salve Regina had three other first teamers who were multi-medalists, including her 4x100 teammates Erin Gunther (Sayville, N.Y.), Natalie Kopiec (Manchester, Conn.), and Maggie McCarthy (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.). Gunther was a triple-gold performer as she won the triple jump and was also a part of the Seahawks' 4x400 relay. McCarthy also took home a 4x400 gold and a 400 meter silver, while Kopiec earned bronze in both the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles.
Fox Tree-McGrath's Roger Williams teammates Siobhan Mitchell (West Newbury, Mass.), Sarah Mawdsley (Sandy Hook, Conn.), and Madison Fancher (Gloversville, N.Y.) joined her as First Teamers with multiple medals. Mitchell was a gold medalist in the 800 and 1500, while also picking up bronzes in the 4x400 and high jump. Mawdsley won both the 3000 meter and 5000 meter runs, plus finished third in the 1500. Fancher was three-event gold medalist, claiming the individual titles in the 100-meter hurdles, the 400-meter hurdles, and the high jump. She was also part of the Hawks' third-place 4x400.
Gordon's Maddie St. Julien (Wareham, Mass.) won gold in both the 100 meter dash and long jump, while earning silvers in the 200, 4x100, and triple jump. Meanwhile, Endicott's Nicole D'Angelo (Readfield, Maine) won gold in the shot put and silver in the pole vault and Nichols' Madison Clark (Tolland, Conn.) was the winner in the 400 and placed third in the 200.
The remaining gold medalists included Salve Regina's Molly Powers (Mahwah, N.J.), who was a member of the Seahawks 4x400, and her teammate Katherine Simoniello (Killingworth, Conn.), who won the discus. Kaitlyn Anthes (Cumberland, R.I.) from Nichols won the hammer throw and Strock from Roger Williams won the pole vault.
Six student-athletes who earned multiple medals had their highest honor on the All-CCC Second Team. Shearer was one of them, earning silver individually in the 800 and 1500, while also being a part of Gordon's second-place 4x400 team. Each of her 4x400 teammates were also multiple-medalists with Abigail Baier (Truckee, Calif.), Rachael Farah (Syosset, N.Y.), and Delaney McDonnell (Wells, Maine) also earning 4x100 silver medals. Baier also took bronze in the long jump.
Olivia Franco (North Haven, Conn.) from Roger Williams claimed the silver in the 400-meter hurdles and was also part of RWU's bronze-medal-winning 4x400 relay. Salve's Alexis Da Cruz (Middletown, R.I.) earned silver in the shot put and bronze in the discus.
Endicott, Gordon, and Salve Regina each had two Second Team All-Conference performers who only secured one medal. Emma Farrington (Essex Junction, Vt.) and Jenna Raffael (North Reading, Mass.) placed second in the 3000 and 100-meter hurdles, respectively, for the Gulls and Hannah Johnson (Peoria, Ariz.) and Rebekah Hinrichsen (Strafford, N.H.) were the silver medalists in the long jump and javelin, respectively, for the Fighting Scots. The Seahawks had Alex Demeo (Burlington, Mass.) and Athena Silva (West Warwick, R.I.) as the runners-up in the 5000 and hammer throw, while Roger Williams' Theresa Cerullo's (Millis, Mass.) second-place finish in the discus rounded out the Second Team.
RWU's Tessa Wise (Charlton, Mass.) was the last remaining double-medalist as she finished third in both the 400 and pole vault.
There were 12 All-Conference performers whose top honor was on the Third Team. Leading that group was Endicott with five All-CCC Third Team selections. They were Olivia Folkes (Amston, Conn.) in the 400 and the 4x100 relay team of Arianna Moffatt (Essex, Vt.), Gabrielle Morton (Peabody, Mass.), Hevyn Pray (Rehoboth, Mass.), and Julianne Sullivan (Wrentham, Mass.).
Salve Regina had three All-CCC Third Teamers with Catherine Norton (Sandy Hook, Conn.) taking third in the 3000, plus Jenny Silva (Mahwah, N.J.) and Elicia Nemirow (Warwick, R.I.) doing the same in the shot put and javelin, respectively.
Finishing off the All-Conference list were Jordin Comstock (East Granby, Conn.) and Kristen Norray (Berne, N.Y.) from Roger Williams, Angie Epplett (Uxbridge, Mass.) from Gordon, and Julia Yewcic (Stoneham, Mass.) from Nichols. Comstock earned her spot as part of the Hawks' 4x400, while Norray was the bronze medalist in the hammer throw. Epplett and Yewcic participated in the 5000 and 800, respectively.
Stanley accounted for 38 points in running events for Salve Regina at the CCC Championship meet. She competed in four events on the track, winning three gold medals and a silver. She finished second in the 100 meter dash, just .12 seconds behind the leader, but took home first prize in the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.79. She was also part of both of Salve Regina's gold medal winning relays. She and her teammates ran the 4x100 in 52.15 and the 4x400 in 4:23.24. Her 4x100 relay team won Relay Team of the Week three times (weeks ending March 24, March 31, and April 28).
