NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University head coach Matt Hird has announced the selection of Victoria Varone (Providence, R.I.), Olivia Conway (Jefferson, N.H.) and Megan Jenkins (Walpole, Mass.) to lead the Seahawk women's track and field team during the 2017 season.

"These three exceptional student-athletes have been elected by their peers because of their talent, their athletic citizenship and their ability to inspire and support," Hird commented.

"Victoria has been an integral part of Salve Regina's distance program throughout her time in Newport," commented Salve Regina head cross country coach and assistant track and field coach Rob McGuinness. She is one of only two active Seahawks who have broken 19:00 at 5,000 meters, and is a New England Division III qualifier at 10,000 meters. Varone is an accomplished cross country runner who shares in the Salve Regina program records for combined team time at 5,000 meters and 6,000 meters. Her performance in the trails resulted in all-Commonwealth Coast Conference honors in 2013 and 2016 and the CCC's Rookie of the Year Award during her freshman campaign. Varone also served as a captain of Salve Regina's cross country team in 2015 and 2016.

Conway has likewise been a mainstay of the throwers during her first two years as a Seahawk. Specializing in the shot put and the javelin, Conway captured second place in both events in the 2016 conference championship as the Seahawks swept to victory. "Even though recurring knee injuries have restricted her training and competition, Olivia keeps striving to produce her best performances and is a constant source of encouragement and humor," Hird commented.

"Megan Jenkins was similarly chosen by her teammates for her ability to lead by example. Her constant improvement in the 400m inspires her fellow sprinters who see in Meg how doing everything right and always maintaining a positive and supportive attitude can produce significant performance gains."

"Leaders like Varone, Conway and Jenkins will be critical if we are to retain the conference championship," Hird added. "I know they will be up to the task."
