Commonwealth Coast Conference Summary: Salve Regina University women's tennis enters the 2014-15 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championships as the fifth seed and will face Gordon College, the fourth seed, in a quarterfinal match on Tuesday, October 7, at 4 p.m. Endicott College earned the first seed after finishing regular season unbeaten in conference play.

Match-up: #5 Salve Regina (4-4; 4-4 CCC) at #4 Gordon (6-6; 5-3 CCC)

SALVE REGINA VS. GORDON
  • Salve Regina and Gordon will meet for the third time in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) playoff round match-up and 30th all-time.
  • Salve Regina holds a 21-8 lead in the all-time series, dating back to the 1986-87 season.
  • The Seahawks dropped an 8-1 decision to the Scots in the regular-season meeting (Sep. 9, 2014).
  • In the title match in 2005, Salve Regina defeated Gordon, 7-2, for their 13th all-time championship.
  • The teams met in the semifinals the next year and Salve Regina avenged a regular-season loss to the Scots to win 7-2 and advance to the finals for the fourth straight year. Neither school has been to the finals since Salve Regina's last appearance in 2006.
AND THE AWARD GOES TO ...
  • Salve Regina's Emma Gruber became the only player not from Endicott or Nichols to win a Player of the Week award for women's tennis in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. The Gulls and Bison have dominated the rookie honor as well - only Kathryn Hughes comes from a school other than the top two (Roger Williams).

  • Both quarterfinal sites (#4 Gordon and #3 Roger Williams) have lighted courts so Tuesday's matches have a later start time (4 p.m.). Student-athletes at Salve Regina and Western New England can attend classes beyond 11 a.m. before departing for their road matches.
SALVE REGINA IN THE CCC CHAMPIONSHIPS
  • Only six different schools have won the women's tennis championship in the Commonwealth Coast Conference.
  • Salve Regina has won more titles (13) than the other five schools combined (Colby-Sawyer – 3; Roger Williams – 3; Endicott – 4; Gordon – 1; Nichols - 1).
  • Salve Regina last won the title in 2005, defeating Gordon College, 7-2, at the Tennis Rhode Island East Bay indoor courts on October 29, 2005, while snow was falling outside.
CHAMPIONSHIP STREAKS
  • Salve Regina has won its 13 championships in three separate streaks – six (1989-1994), four (1997-2000), and three (2003-2005).
  • No other school has had a streak greater than three - Endicott has won the last three titles, each championship victory coming on the road in Dudley, Mass., against Nichols.
CHANGE IN FORMAT
  • The first 11 CCC championships (1989-1999) in women's tennis were formatted as a flighted event, four singles and one doubles for each school entered. Salve Regina won nine of its titles in this format.
  • Since 2000, the participating schools have met in dual matches with quarterfinal, semifinal and final rounds. Salve Regina won four of the first six championships held in this format.
  • The Seahawks and Scots have met twice in the championships with the dual-match format. Salve Regina won both times including the title match in 2005.
  • Roger Williams defeated Salve Regina, 5-4, in the championship match on October 18, 2006, earning the first automatic bid to the NCAA Championships in the history of the sport in the conference.
ON THE ROAD IN THE PLAYOFFS
  • Salve Regina has won twice in first-round playoff action away from Newport. The Seahawks upset the Chargers of Colby-Sawyer, 5-4, in New London, N.H. (Oct. 29, 2002). After suffering an 8-1 regular-season defeat in Newport to Western New England in 2007, the Seahawks traveled to Springfield, Mass., and knocked off the Golden Bears, 5-4, in a thrilling reversal (Oct. 16, 2007).
SALVE REGINA IN WENHAM, MASS.
  • Salve Regina has a 9-4 edge over Gordon in matches played on the Scots' home courts.
  • Last win in Wenham – Sep. 29, 2010 – Salve Regina swept all nine matches for a 9-0 victory over Gordon.
  • Two years ago the teams met at the Bass River Tennis Club in nearby Beverly, Mass., for the regular-season meeting and the Seahawks won, 7-2.

  • Courtney Bailey accounted for the only Seahawk point with her three-set victory at sixth singles. Bailey has the most singles victories on the team in 2014 (five), followed by Taylor Amendola and Emma Gruber (both with four).

  • Salve Regina has won eight of 10 dual matches on October 7. The Seahawks last competed on this date in 2011 and posted a 5-4 victory over Western New England.
  • The Seahawks played on this date in back to back years (2000, 2001) against Colby-Sawyer and traded 5-4 victories at the opponent's home court.
FEAST OR FAMINE
  • In its eight dual matches of 2014, only one had a margin less than seven. The Seahawks won their season-opener, 5-4, at Western New England. All other matches have been decided by a 9-0 or 8-1 score, win or lose.
WHAT'S UP NEXT
  • The winner of today's match travels to Beverly, Mass., on Thursday to face the top seed and three-time defending champion Endicott College. The Gulls and second-seeded Bison have byes in the first round.
  • Salve Regina participates in the New England Women's Invitational Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) at Amherst and Mount Holyoke Colleges (October 17-19). The Seahawks have entered three pairs in the Federation Cup-style event: Emma Gruber/Taylor Amendola, Elizabeth DiFilippo/Meg Olson, and (a triple of) Courtney Bailey/Julie Grant/Isabelle Weatherby.

  • Salve Regina head coach Cory Tusler has a level-headed approach to the playoffs: "Gordon has a good squad, but our players are ready to go. They feel we can get some points off this team and they're ready to play. The weather may be a factor; it's possible we may move indoors. Go Seahawks!"
  • "Salve has done a tremendous job this year. With two of its top players (Kasey Walther, Hayley Maxwell) missing significant time with injuries, to reach the postseason as a fifth seed is impressive."
RECORD BOOK CHECK
  • With 43 matches playing doubles together, seniors Elizabeth DiFilippo and Meg Olson trail only the twin combination of Kristina and Michelle Kennedy '07 who finished their four-year career with 51 matches as a doubles pair. DiFilippo and Olson have won the most doubles matches of any 2014 Seahawk pair (five).
