Seahawks win nine on the Big Nine

MILTON, Mass. – The Salve Regina University women's tennis team defeated Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Curry, 9-0, at the Big Nine Courts on Tuesday afternoon.  With the win the Seahawks improve to 3-2 on the season and 3-2 in the league, while the Colonels fall to 0-8 overall and 0-5 in the CCC.

The Seahawks swept all six singles matches and all three double matches.

Salve Regina No. 1 singles player, sophomore Emma Gruber (New Canaan, Conn.) won her match 6-1, 6-1 against junior Kimberly Love (Windsor Locks, Conn.).  Senior No. 2 singles player Elizabeth DiFilippo (West Chester, Pa.)  claimed her tilt verse sophomore Kayla Prete (Orange, Conn.), 6-2, 7-5. In No. 3 singles, the Colonels junior Hannah Erickson (Mount Desert, Maine) was bested by sophomore Taylor Amendola (Westbrook, Conn.), 6-3, 6-2. Freshman Courtney Bailey (No. Dartmouth, Mass.) earned the No. 4 singles win for Salve Regina, 6-1, 6-1 by defeating freshman Laura Ferris (Shelton, Conn.). The Seahawks junior Isabelle Weatherby (Newport, R.I.) earned 6-2, 6-2 wins over freshman Alexandra Moschetto (Hampton Falls, N.H.).  The No. 6 position was won by Salve Regina's Julie Grant (Warwick, R.I.) by default.

In doubles at the No.1 slot, the Seahawks pair of senior Hayley Maxwell (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) and Gruber bested Love and Prete, 8-4.  The No. 2 duo of DiFilippo and senior Meg Olson (Colchester, Vt.) outlasted Ferris and senior Alison Rhodes (Rye, N.H.), 8-3.  In the final match on the day, No. 3 doubles partners, Amendola and Bailey defeated Moschetto and Erickson, 8-2.

The Colonels return to action on Friday, September 26 at 3:30, when they host Anna Maria.  The Seahawks return to action on Saturday, September 27, when they host CCC opponent Wentworth for a 12 p.m. match.
