Hawks sweep Seahawks in Bristol, 9-0

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University women's tennis team remained undefeated at home with a 9-0 win against Salve Regina University Wednesday afternoon.

The win for the Hawks improves the team to 4-0 on the year in Bristol, while moving to 2-1 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. Salve Regina evens out its record a 2-2 overall and in the CCC.

Lauren Schmidt (South Windsor, Conn.) and Alexandra Brown (Kennett, Mo.) earned an 8-2 win over Emma Gruber (New Canaan, Conn.) and Taylor Amendola (Westbrook, Conn.) at #1 doubles. The Hawks' Kathryn Hughes (Westford, Conn.) and Gabrielle Riley would also pick up am 8-1 win at #3 doubles, defeating Julie Grant (Warwick, R.I.) and Anastasia Lara (Escazu, Costa Rica).

Elizabeth DiFilippo (West Chester, Pa.) and Meg Olson (Colchester, Vt.) gave Harley Kaiserman (Setauket, N.Y.) and Caroline McCarthy (Carver, Mass.) a scare at #2, but the Hawks were still able to come away with the 8-5 win.

At singles play, Schmidt took a 6-1, 6-1 decision at the #1 flight against Gruber, while Hughes defeated DiFilippo 6-4, 6-1 at #2.  Kaiserman picked up a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Amendola at #3, and Brown edged out Courtney Bailey (North Dartmouth, Mass.) 6-3, 6-3 at #4. McCarthy and Ali Stankiewicz closed out the win for RWU with respective wins of 6-2, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-0 at #5 and #6 against Isabelle Weatherby (Newport, R.I.) and Olson.

Roger Williams will host Curry tomorrow, while Salve Regina plays Curry as well next Tuesday.
