Gordon gets best of Salve Regina

WENHAM, Mass.—Gordon women's tennis ended its tough start to the 2014 season with a commanding 8-1 win over Salve Regina in the Commonwealth Coast Conference opener for the Fighting Scots. Gordon took all three doubles matches and five of the six singles matches to take a big step toward the conference playoffs in October.

With the conference schedule starting early in the season, Gordon had to quickly forget about a narrow loss to Bridgewater State last week. The Fighting Scots defeated Salve Regina for the first time in a decade last fall, but both teams lost contributors from a season ago.

The Fighting Scots got on the board first with a quick 8-0 win at second doubles. Lily Drescher (Reading, Mass.) and Nathalia Moran (Lake Villa, Ill.) had control of the match from the first game, cruising to the shutout victory. Gordon's first doubles combo of Tawnie Yeaw (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) and freshman Sophie Linnell (Richmond, Va.) dispatched Kasey Walther (Natick, Mass.) and Emma Gruber (New Canaan, Conn.), 8-2, to take a two-point lead. Gordon completed the sweep of doubles competition just a few minutes later when Abby Caron (Bedford, N.H.) and Alex DiDomizio (Mahwah, N.J.) staved off a late rally at the third flight.

Caron kept the good fortune rolling in the fourth singles spot, as she defeated Meg Olson (Colchester, Vt.) in straight sets, 6-3 6-0. Yeaw clinched the Scots' first win of the season in the first flight, beating Walther 7-5, 6-2. Drescher and Linnell followed suit with straight-set victories of their own to put the Scots up 7-0 in the match.

Salve Regina's lone point of the day came in a marathon match at sixth singles, where Courtney Bailey (North Dartmouth, Mass.) won 14-12 in the third-set tiebreaker over DiDomizio. Moran defeated Isabelle Weatherby (Newport, R.I.) in the final match of the day, winning 10-5 in the third-set tiebreak.

The Seahawks (1-1) are back in action on Friday at home against conference opponent Eastern Nazarene, while Gordon (1-2) returns to non-conference action on Thursday versus visiting Rhode Island College.
