Commonwealth Coast Conference Summary: Salve Regina University women's tennis enters the 2013 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championships as the sixth seed and will face its in-state rival Roger Williams University, the third seed, in a quarterfinal match on Tuesday, October 8 at 4 p.m. Nichols College earned the first seed after tiebreak procedures with Endicott and Roger Williams.

SALVE REGINA VS. ROGER WILLIAMS
  • Salve Regina continues its longest rivalry when it plays at Roger Williams for the 39th time in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) quarterfinal round match-up.
  • Salve Regina holds a 22-16 lead in the all-time series, dating back to the 1983-84 season.
  • The Seahawks dropped a 9-0 decision to the Hawks in the season-opener (Aug. 31, 2013).
  • On its way to titles in 2000 and 2005, Salve Regina defeated Roger Williams in semifinal matches both seasons.
SALVE REGINA IN THE CCC CHAMPIONSHIPS
  • Only six different schools have won the women's tennis championship in the Commonwealth Coast Conference.
  • Salve Regina has won more titles (13) than the other five schools combined (Colby-Sawyer – 3; Roger Williams – 3; Endicott – 3; Gordon – 1; Nichols - 1).
  • Salve Regina last won the title in 2005, defeating Gordon College, 7-2, at the Tennis Rhode Island East Bay indoor courts on October 29, 2005, while snow was falling outside.
CHAMPIONSHIP STREAKS
  • Salve Regina has won its 13 championships in three separate streaks – six (1989-1994), four (1997-2000), and three (2003-2005).
  • No other school has had a streak greater than two - Endicott has won the last two titles, both championship victories coming on the road in Dudley, Mass., against Nichols.
CHANGE IN FORMAT
  • The first 11 CCC championships (1989-1999) in women's tennis were formatted as a flighted event, four singles and one doubles for each school entered. Salve Regina won nine of its titles in this format.
  • Since 2000, the participating schools have met in dual matches with quarterfinal, semifinal and final rounds. Salve Regina won four of the first six championships held in this format.
  • The Seahawks and Hawks have met eight times in the championships with the dual-match format. Roger Williams has won six of those meetings including the last four in a row (last season, the Hawks ended the Seahawks run for the title with a 5-0 victory on Oct. 9, 2012).
  • Roger Williams defeated Salve Regina, 5-4, in the championship match on October 18, 2006, earning the first automatic bid to the NCAA Championships in the history of the sport in the conference.
ON THE ROAD IN THE PLAYOFFS
  • Salve Regina has won twice in first-round playoff action away from Newport. In 2002, the Seahawks upset the Chargers of Colby-Sawyer, 5-4, in New London, N.H. (Oct. 29, 2002). After suffering an 8-1 regular-season defeat in Newport to Western New England in 2007, the Seahawks traveled to Springfield, Mass., and knocked off the Golden Bears, 5-4, in a thrilling reversal (Oct. 16, 2007).

  • Salve Regina has an 11-7 edge over Roger Williams in matches played on the Hawks' home courts.
  • Last win in Bristol – Sep. 26, 2006 – Salve Regina took four of six singles matches (1-4) for a 5-4 victory over Roger Williams.
  • Hawks have won the last five meetings in Bristol, R.I.

  • Elizabeth Liguori accounted for two of the Seahawks' three points with a doubles victory at the third spot with junior Elizabeth DiFilippo and then a straight-set singles victory over Kelsey Peterson at the fifth spot.
  • Salve Regina won the battle of Emma at fourth singles – Emma Gruber triumphed over Emma Carey in a three-set match: 6-7(4), 6-2, 1-0 (10-7).

  • Salve Regina has won five of eight dual matches on October 8. The Seahawks last competed on this date in 2008 and posted a 5-4 victory over Nichols College.

  • The winner of today's match travels to Beverly, Mass., on Thursday to face the second seed and defending champion Endicott College. The Gulls and top-seeded Bison have byes in the first round.

  • Recent Salve Regina Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, Christine Linski Keller '92, owns the school's all-time singles victory mark with 60.
SENIOR MOMENT FOR LIGUORI
  • Elizabeth Liguori, the team's lone senior and captain in 2013-14, won her final regular-season home match in singles play (2-6, 6-1, 6-4) on Sep. 27, 2013.
  • Liguori has the most singles victories for the Seahawks this season (seven) and had the longest victory streak of any player on the team (six – ended with a loss at Endicott on Oct. 2).
