Liguori lifts singles record but Seahawks fall

DUDLEY, Mass. - Senior Elizabeth Liguori (Westerly, R.I.) raised her season singles record to 7-2 with a victory at fifth singles, but Salve Regina University women's tennis fell to Nichols College, 6-3, in the final regular season dual match for both schools before the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championships begin next week.

Liguori had a racquet in both Seahawk points as she paired with junior Elizabeth DiFilippo (West Chester, Pa.) for an 8-3 win at third doubles.

Nichols College (10-3; 7-1 CCC), which earned the top seed in the conference championships by virtue of its tiebreaker with Endicott College (7-1) and Roger Williams University (7-1), took two of the three doubles matches and nearly swept the singles.

All but one of the singles matches were decided in straight sets. Salve Regina freshman Emma Gruber (New Canaan, Conn.) split her first two sets, rallying for a 6-2 score in the second, before winning in a third-set tiebreak against Emma Carey.

Salve Regina (3-7; 3-5 CCC) had clinched the sixth seed for the conference championships and will travel to Bristol, R.I., on Tuesday to face the third-seeded Hawks of Roger Williams.
