Summary
NEWPORT, R.I. (September 21, 2019) -- Salve Regina University women's soccer defeated Endicott College, 2-1, in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opener for both schools. The Seahawk victory is just their third in 29 meetings with the Gulls in women's soccer. Salve Regina and Endicott are now both 4-3 overall, while the Seahawks take a 1-0 conference mark into their next game.

Junior Gabriella Prisco (West Haven, Conn.) gave the Gulls an early 1-0 lead in the second minute after converted a feed from sophomore Chloe Waldron (Harwinton, Conn.). The Seahawks knotted the score at 1-1 in the 16th minute as Katie Szemreylo (Marlborough, Conn.) blasted a free kick from in front of the visitor bench to the top right corner on the far post for her second goal of the season. Freshman Meagan McLaughlin (East Hampton, Conn.) delivered the game-winner when she took a long feed from Amanda Bentz (Holbrook, N.Y.) and deposited it in the upper right corner.

Series and Streaks
All three Seahawk wins in the series have come since 2011. The first non-losing decision for Salve Regina was a 2-2 tie in Beverly, Mass., on November 5, 2003, but that was a postseason contest and the Gulls advanced on penalty kicks. Endicott leads the series, 25-3-1, and had a five-game win streak snapped today.

Three Stars of the Game

  1. Salve Regina freshman Jenna Park (Barrington, R.I.) made six saves including a brilliant kick-stop late in the second half on a point blank shot from a Gull. Park prevented any rebound for a second-chance opportunity.
  2. Salve Regina freshman Meagan McLaughlin (East Hampton, Conn.) connected on her team-leading fifth goal of the season by streaking ahead of a Gull defender and getting her one shot past Kayla Wentworth.
  3. Salve Regina senior Katie Szemreylo (Marlborough, Conn.) distributed the ball through the midfield and produced a game-tying goal in the 16th minute.

Key Stat of the Game
The teams were nearly even in shots on goal (EC-7; SRU-5) while the Seahawks had the edge in corner kicks, 4-2.

Turning Point
With Endicott applying pressure late in the second half, Endicott freshman Lindsey Papa (Tolland, Conn.) drilled a low shot to Park's right side and the Seahawk freshman keeper made a kick save by sticking her right leg out and also made a successful trap to prevent a rebound.
