Nor'easters eliminate Seahawks in CCC postseason

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The third-seeded University of New England dominated sixth-seeded Salve Regina University from start-to-finish on its way to a 4-0 victory in the opening round of the 2018 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Women's Soccer Championship on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 28) at UNE Blue Storm Stadium. The Nor'easters advance to the semifinals for the first time since 2010.

Jessie Maywalt (Wall, N.J.) put the hosts in front early as a cross from Katie Beaudoin (Coventry, R.I.) found her open on the left post for the score in the second minute of play.

UNE (8-7-2) added some insurance in the 50th minute when Ashley Sherman (Essex, Conn.) tallied her first goal of the year with help of Beaudoin and Caroline Wilson (Tiverton, R.I.).

After just subbing in moments earlier, Kat Buscemi (Jefferson, Md.) extended the advantage to 3-0 in the 61st minute. Maywalt found Buscemi with a corner kick at the opposite post. A turnover by the Seahawks off a goal kick led to a Peighton Barker (Hooksett, N.H.) goal in the 70th minute.

Jenna Pannone (Prospect, Conn.) (3) and Emily Ashman (Madison, Conn.) (2) combined for five saves for UNE, which held a 21-6 lead in shots. Carly Pala (Milford, Conn.) made four stops for the visitors.

The Nor'easters will visit No.2 Gordon College (a 2-0 winner over No.7 Wentworth) on Wednesday. A 39th-minute goal for Gordon was all that separated the Fighting Scots and Nor'easters back on Spet. 15 in the CCC opener.
