Anchorwomen power past Seahawks, 2-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Junior forwards Olivia Capraro (North Providence, R.I.) and Brittany DeGrooth (Westerly, R.I.) each scored, while freshman goalkeeper Carissa Gaglione (West Warwick, R.I.) made nine save to earn her first collegiate victory, as Rhode Island College edged Salve Regina University, 2-1, at Alumni Field on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Senior midfielder Stephanie Ricci (Smithfield, RI) and DeGrooth combined to send Capraro in clean on a breakaway before she was fouled in the box in the 48th minute. Capraro slid the ensuing penalty kick along the ground to the low left side to beat Salve Regina junior netminder Carly Pala (Milford, CT) to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage.
• Capraro came down the left sideline and sprung DeGrooth with a pass at the top of the 18-yard box. DeGrooth slipped a shot just inside the far post to give the Anchorwomen a 2-0 lead.
• The Seahawks turned up the heat late in the game with a flurry of scoring opportunities. Senior midfielder Courtney Bouchard (Middleton, MA) took possession of the ball at the top of the box and sent in freshman midfielder Cara Cote (Adams, MA) unguarded from the left side. Cote froze Gaglione and slid a pass out front to classmate forward Molly Breslin (Belle Harbor, NY) who scored with a quick shot.
• Gaglione turned aside nine shots to earn the win (1-1), while Pala stopped four in a losing effort (0-3-1).

BY THE NUMBERS

• Salve Regina outshot the hosts, 19-13, and 10-6 in shots on goal.
• The Seahawks also held the advantage in corner kicks, 9-5.
