Seahawks score three goals in second half to salvage draw versus Lancers

Summary
After facing deficits of 2-0 and 3-1 late in the second half, the Salve Regina University women's soccer team scored two unanswered goals to force overtime in an eventual 3-3 tie with visiting Worcester State University.

Series and Streaks
This was the fourth meeting between the two teams all-time. The Lancers still hold a 2-1-1 record in the series.

Three Stars of the Game

1. Salve Regina junior Abby McMackin (Walpole, Mass.) scored twice, getting the Seahawks on the board in 61st minute, then tying the game in the 77th.
2. Worcester State freshman Jill Zinkus (Grafton, Mass.) stopped 14 shots, while allowing three second half goals. However she had some timely stops when the Seahawks were threatening to take the lead late in the second half and overtime.
3. Salve Regina junior Carly Pala (Milford, Conn.) stopped eight of eleven shots while allowing three goals. After the Lancers scored to make it 3-1 Pala stopped every shot she faced after that for the next 32 minutes over action into double overtime.

Key Stat of the Game
After having only scored one goal in the last 225 minutes, the Seahawks put three goals on the board in a matter of 17 minutes to tie the game at three in the 77th.

Turning Point
Worcester state led 2-0 in the second half and had been playing more relaxed, trying to possess the ball and control the clock, but after McMackin's first goal made it a one score game the Lancers upped the tempo and answered right back in the 69th. Morgan Goozey (Douglas, Mass.) took a loose ball off a throw-in and tapped it past Pala to restablish a two score lead. The Seahawks responded five minutes later when Carah Cote (Adams, Mass.) streaked down the middle of the field, splitting two defenders and letting a shot fly that found the back of the net. Three minutes later McMackin netted her second of the game amidst a sea of players in front of the net off a free kick. The Lancers controlled the first overtime and the Seahawks controlled the second, but neither could find the back of the net again and the game ended in a draw.

• In the previous three meetings the final score of each game had been 1-0, a combined three goals in three games. Today six total goals were scored, three apiece.
• The Seahawks held a 25-19 advantage in shots and a slight 7-6 advantage in corner kicks.
• Jill Anderson (Spencer, Mass.) and Ashleigh Howland (Wilmington, Mass.) scored to open the game for the Lancers, striking in the 33rd and 53rd respectively as the built a 2-0 lead.
• It is the second most goals scored ever in a tie in Seahawks program history. The only time more goals were scored in a draw was a 4-4 tie with Gordon College on September 20, 2003.
