BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Freshman midfielder Melissa Morton (Uxbridge, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal to lead the Bridgewater State University women's soccer team to a 1-0 shutout victory over visiting Salve Regina University on Tuesday evening at Swenson Field.

Bridgewater State improves to 4-3 on the season with its fourth straight shutout win, while Salve Regina slips to 3-4. The Bears are 11-3 versus the Seahawks since 2002 and have won each of the last three meetings.

Morton broke a scoreless tie in the 52nd minute off a perfectly placed throw in from junior midfielder Allyson Pontes (Dartmouth, Mass.) as she found the back of the net from ten yards out.

Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren DeSousa (Taunton, Mass.) extended her shutout streak to four games as she has not allowed goal in 365 plus minutes. DeSousa turned away two shots on the night as she lowered her goals against average to 0.86.

Both teams gave solid defensive efforts as there were only 17 shots in the game including just eight on frame. Salve Regina freshman keeper Carly Pala (Milford, Conn.) made five saves in the setback for the Seahawks.

Senior midfielder Marissa Yowell (Ashland, Mass.) led all players with three shots. The Bears held a 13-4 shot advantage as well as a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.

The Bears travel to Mass. Maritime Academy Friday night for a 7 p.m. MASCAC game with the Buccaneers. The Seahawks host Worcester State University on Thursday afternoon at 3:30.
