NEWPORT, R.I. - Junior Lauren Bulk (Portsmouth, R.I.) doubled her season goal total as she scored both in the Salve Regina women's soccer 2-1 win over in-state rival, Johnson & Wales (R.I.), Monday afternoon.

Johnson & Wales (3-5-2) jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead just 9:27 into action. Freshman Emily McClarnon (Wakefield, R.I.) chipped a quick pass to senior Samantha Adams (Denver, Colo.) right around midfield. After a second touch, Adams launch the ball from the top of the 18-yard box just out of the reach of freshman goalie Carly Montgomery (Malverne, N.Y.) to give JWU a 1-0 lead.

Senior Stephanie DeLue (Hadley, Mass.) narrowly missed tying the game for Salve Regina as her shot from the top of the box ricocheted just off the bottom of the crossbar 22:55 into action. In congestiontion in front of the net, senior Erin McCullough (Ludlow, Mass.) found Bulk just over a minute later for Bulk to split a pair of defenders and tie the game at 1-1.

Montgomery made her final save of the half with just under a minute left to keep the game tied going into the break.

The game remained tied for much of the second half as each team each had one good scoring chance until Bulk sent home a rebound in the 61st minute to give SRU its first lead of the game, 2-1.

Several times over the remaining 29 minutes, the Wildcats would push the ball into their offensive zone, but the Seahawk defense held strong and cleared the ball as Montgomery did not need a save over the final minutes. Johnson & Wales threatened to tie the game in the last nine seconds of action as sophomore Liza Marinaro (Palo Alto, Calif.) had a clear shot on goal but sent the ball high over the net as time expired.

Montgomery recorded eight saves in the net for Salve Regina while sophomores Cassie Collins (Oswego, N.Y.) and Alexa Rose (Lancaster, Pa.) split time in the net for JWU. Rose suffered the loss, allowing the second half goal while making five saves.

Salve Regina returns to the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 5 when the Seahawks host Commonwealth Conference opponent University of New England at 12 p.m. Johnson & Wales returns to action against on Oct. 2 when the Wildcats host Rivier at 6 p.m.
