Lydon lights up for three goals; Hawks def. Seahawks, 3-0

NEWPORT, R.I. - Senior midfielder Katie Lydon (Riverside, R.I.) scored twice in the first half and once early in the second half as Roger Williams University women's soccer triumphed 3-0 over Salve Regina University in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action on Saturday.

It was homecoming for the Seahawks but Lydon was not far from home herself.

Salve Regina's (1-8-1; 0-3-0 CCC) best scoring chances came early as senior Stephanie DeLue (Hadley, Mass.) left-footed a shot that crossed in front of senior goal keeper Stephanie Jaques (Burlington, Vt.) before the netminder deflected it for a Seahawk corner kick.

The Seahawks kept applying pressure with a shot from sophomore Olivia Maxell (Lincoln, R.I.) but Jaques came up with the save. DeLue and Maxell were later denied again in first-half shot attempts.

Lydon's first goal came at 22:12 with an assist from junior forward Kristen Tetrault (Tolland, Conn.).

Roger Williams (8-2-1; 2-1-0 CCC) owned the action for the rest of the half, peppering shots on Seahawk freshman goal keeper Carly Montgomery (Malverne, N.Y.). Lydon connected on a shot at 31:48 for another score.

Her third goal came courtesy of a penalty kick at 48:54.

Jaques shut the Seahawks out with six saves; Montgomery had a season-high 17 saves for Salve Regina.

Salve Regina hosts another local school, Johnson & Wales University, on Monday at 4 p.m.; Roger Williams plays next Saturday when it hosts Eastern Nazarene at 3 p.m.
