Salve Regina blanked at Gordon

WENHAM, Mass. - Five different scorers notched tallies on the board as the Fighting Scots cruised to a 5-0 win over the visiting Seahawks of Salve Regina University today in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's soccer action on Gordon's Quad.

Senior midfielder Kendra Woudenberg (Whitinsville, Mass.) paced the offensive effort for Gordon with a goal and two assists, while sophomore forward Lauren Hayes (Wantage, N.J.) recorded a goal and an assist and senior forward Taylor McSherry (Wolcott, Conn.), sophomore midfielder Jamie Breton (Concord, Mass.), and junior midfielder Olivia Balloveras (Freeport, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring with a goal each. Sophomore netminder McKenzie Dion (North Grafton, Mass.) preserved the shutout and improved to a perfect 4-0-0 with three saves.

The Scots move to 7-1-0 overall and 2-0-0 in conference with the win, while the Seahawks drop to 1-6-1 overall, 0-2-0 in league play.

McSherry struck first on the day at the 8:56 mark after heading home a serve from senior back Julia Miller (New York, N.Y.) for the 1-0 lead. Following several quality opportunities, Woudenberg attacked the end line and crossed a ball through the area to Breton at the far post, who buried her fourth of the season at 20:46 to put the Scots up by two. Then, just seven minutes later, Woudenberg took advantage of her own scoring opportunity by collecting a pass from Hayes and striking a ball into the side netting from 20 yards out to give Gordon a healthy 3-0 lead to carry into the break.

That duo connected again four minutes into the second frame as Woudenberg made a 30-yard run down the left side and crossed the ball to a waiting Hayes at the top of the goal box to extend the Scots' lead to 4-0.

Then, in the 73rd minute, the Scots added one more for insurance after sophomore midfielder Anna Soukenik (Mantua, Ohio) cleared out of the backfield to Balloveras, who broke free behind Salve's line of defense and beat keeper Kaylee Miller (Fr./West Warwick, R.I.) to put the game out of reach for the visiting Seahawks.

Keeper Carly Montgomery (Fr./Malverne, N.Y.) is credited with the loss for Salve, making nine stops in 75 minutes of work.

The Scots are back at it on Wednesday, September 25 as they travel to face non-conference New England College for a 4 p.m. start. Salve also takes a break from CCC action to face Bridgewater State on the road on Tuesday, September 24 at 7 p.m.
