Second half surge propels Seahawks to CCC win

In the first Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) contest of the 2019 season for both sides, a strong second half push by the Seahawks of Salve Regina University proved enough to overtake the host Fighting Scots, 20-9, on Senior Day this afternoon at the Brigham Athletic Complex.

For the Scots, Olivia McCarrick notched a team-high seven draw controls to go with five goals, while Lauren Oliver had two assists and Melanie Dwyer caused three turnovers.

Salve Regina's Kaity Doherty (So./Portsmouth, R.I.) scored a game-high eight goals, Olivia Slysz (Sr./South Hadley, Mass.) and Stefanie Salisbury (Jr./Cranston, R.I.) each scored a hat trick, and Lindsey Smith (Sr./North Attleboro, Mass.) dished out three assists.

Gordon takes a break from league play to travel to face Elms College on Monday, March 25 for a 5 p.m. start.

How It Happened

  • Four lead changes and as many ties made for a back-and-forth opening 14 minutes of the first half. It was only fitting that a pair of Scots seniors joined forces to book the first goal of the game just over a minute in as McCarrick found the back of the net thanks to a feed from Hannah Bourk to kick start the scoring on the day.
  • Both teams then traded goals until the Seahawks netted four unanswered tallies to take an 8-4 lead. Brenna Otte knocked in one more for the Scots before the half to cut SRU's lead to three at the break.
  • After winning the draw control to open the second, Salve immediately marched down the field to add a quick goal, but McCarrick answered back two minutes later with a goal for the home team to bring it back to a three score game.
  • From there the tides turned, however, as Salve went on a 10-1 offensive surge to take a favorable 19-7 lead with 12 minutes remaining.  Despite McCarrick scoring a pair of goals in a 90-second span, the visitors held fast to secure the 11-goal victory.

Beyond The Box Score

  • Kaity Doherty's eight goals tie a Salve Regina single-game program record.
  • With three points on the day senior Lindsey Smith surpasses the 100 career point mark.
  • Olivia McCarrick's five goals this afternoon is a new season-high for the senior.
  • Lauren Oliver found Emma Hryzan her first career assist in the first half.
