Nor'easters close with a flurry to rally past Salve Regina

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England women's lacrosse team scored eight unanswered goals over the final 20 minutes to take a 15-9 come-from-behind win over Salve Regina University in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match Saturday afternoon (Apr. 8) at the Big Blue Turf.

UNE improved its conference mark to 3-1, while getting back to the .500 mark overall at 6-6. The Seahawks dropped to 5-5 overall and 1-2 in CCC games.

Trailing 9-7 after a Kaitlin Gillespie goal at the 24:23 mark of the second half, the Nor'easters would keep Salve Regina off the scoreboard the rest of the way. Jocelyn Davee, Nichole Carvalho and Jolena Lampron each scored twice to account for six of UNE's eight goals to close the contest. Korinne Bohunsky and Kimberly Gosselin had the other markers. The Nor'easters rattled off five goals over a span of 4:33 to turn a two-goal deficit into a three-goal lead.

Davee had a game-high five goals to pace UNE. Bohunsky finished with three, while Carvalho and Lampron two apiece. Brooke Kelleher scored one goal and set-up five others to finish with six points. 

For the Seahawks, Katie Kline led the way with three goals. Gillespie and Maddie Villareal each had a pair.

On top 7-5 at halftime, the Nor'easters saw their lead evaporate quickly at the outset of the second stanza. Four different players scored for Salve Regina, as the Seahawks forged a 9-7 advantage.

Both goalkeepers -- Bridget Newbury for Salve Regina and Maritza Nary for UNE -- totaled 13 saves.

Bohunsky filled the stat sheet for the Nor'easters, piling up eight draw controls, six ground balls and three caused turnovers. Lampron and Olivia Carpenter combined for 10 ground balls and six caused turnovers.

Amanda Lachat played a strong game for Salve Regina, coming up with seven ground balls and causing three turnovers. 

Both teams return to action Tuesday with CCC matches. UNE hosts Wentworth Institute of Technology at 4 p.m., and the Seahawks travel to Endicott College for game starting at the same time.
