Lasers storm back in second half to beat Seahawks

Summary
The Lasell College women's lacrosse team scored seven unanswered goals in the second half on its way to a 10-8 comeback victory over Salve Regina University in non-conference action Thursday night.

Series and Streaks
This was the first ever meeting between the teams. The Lasers now own a 1-0 record in the all-time series.

Three Stars of the Game
1 – Lasell junior Taylor Yandow (Moretown, Vt.) - scored twice and dished out two assists. Her second goal proved to be the game-winner.
2 – Salve Regina freshman Maddie Villareal (Portsmouth, R.I.) - scored three goals and had an assist. She has a hat-trick in both of her collegiate games now.
3 – Lasell senior Bridget Delaney (Weymouth, Mass.) - made 15 saves, 11 in the second half to earn the victory between the pipes for the Lasers.

Key Stat of the Game
Trailing the entire game and 7-3 with 25 minutes left in the second half the Lasers scored six straight goals over a 20 minute span to take the lead. Riley Musial (Clinton, Conn.) scored with 9:59 left to give the Lasers their first lead, one that they would not relinquish the rest of the game.

Turning Point
The Seahawks struck first to increase they lead to 6-2 just after halftime, but the Lasers answered immediately after the next draw. Maddie Villareal scored her third of the day to widen the gap again but the Lasers responded on the ensuing draw, when Yandow raced down the field in transition and buried a shot with 24:47 left to play. After struggling early in the game the Lasers defense locked down on the Seahawks, preventing players like Villareal and Kaitlin Gillespie (Haddam, Conn.) from getting to the middle of the attacking zone. While the Seahawks offense went cold the Lasers caught fire, especially in the transition game, where they displayed their speed, knifing through the Seahawks zone to the net. A 6-0 run put the Lasers up 9-7 with 4:04 left. Katie Kline (Brookfield, Conn.) scored to draw the Seahawks within a goal with 2:40 left, but the Lasers were able to play keepaway and then find the open player when the Seahawks came to trap. Musial scored for the Lasers with 28 seconds remaining to end the suspense.

Quick Hits

• Bridget Newbury (Bridgewater, Mass.) made three saves in the loss to fall to 1-1 in net for the Seahawks.
• The Seahawks held statistical advantages in shots, groundballs, draw controls, and turnovers, but the Lasers were highly efficient when they had to be in the final 20 minutes when they made their blitz for the lead. 
• The Seahawks held a 27-17 advantage in shots, 16-8 in groundballs, 12-8 in draw controls, and committed 13 turnovers to the Lasers 19. The goaltending for the Lasers proved to be the difference in the end.
